It's deaf awareness week and I was surprised that learning to sign is not as scary as I thought. When starting to sign teachers may focus on signing what you speak and then progressing to structuring sentences in bsl which can be very different sentence structure to what we are used to. Yes, it gets complex like any language but you can quickly pick up some words and phrases. You could quite easily make someone's day even with just a few signs. There are apps that can help and also some Facebook influencers where they teach a sign a day, which is a great way of picking up things.
