The Fraunhofer Development Center for X-ray Technology, a division of Fraunhofer IIS, has presented a novel testing option for batteries in electric vehicles. In collaboration with Technische Universität München, measurement results from preliminary studies were presented for the Air research project (drive battery inspection using X-rays). The system allows the mechanical integrity of battery modules to be visually assessed by taking an X-ray image of the vehicle and the drive battery mounted in the underbody. For this purpose, the vehicle is driven into the measuring system.
