What's the Tea on Juneteenth? ERIE's African American Affinity Network celebration was nothing short of spectacular!
We gathered to honor the significance of Juneteenth and learn about hibiscus tea's historical role in healing. Our ME/WE team provided valuable information on resources available, the DJ kept us moving and grooving while the food trucks kept us well fed. We can't forget the sand art that added a creative touch.
Thanks to EAAN and all who attended. It was a great day of learning and fun!

Today, we honor Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. This day marks a pivotal moment in American history when, on June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and enslaved people were now freeโtwo and a half years after President Lincolnโs Emancipation Proclamation.

For almost 140 years FRIENDSHIP has changed lives through GFS Perth and still does. Donโt miss the chance of joining us in the new phase of the journey when, with you, we will change the lives of many more.
Our theme for FRIENDSHIP FRIDAYS over the first months of 2024 is play dates. Research tells that has adults we donโt play enough and so this is our offering to counteract that by suggesting things FRIENDS can do together.
This week we are referring you to an African Proverb as a starting point: "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." It invites us to contemplate the depth, richness and courage that comes from shared experiences, shared burdens, and shared triumphs.
So how about this for an ideaโฆmake a list of at least 10 things youโd love to do, share it with each other then choose the one youโd do if you were brave enough. Do it together. It will get your energy ramped up and the shared experience will deepen your FRIENDSHIP.
GFS Perth has been enabling FRIENDSHIP for almost 140 years. Check out our socials or www.gfsperth.com.au.

๐๐พThe Haitian Revolution brought an end to slavery and French colonial rule in Haiti in 1804.
๐๐พ In Saint Lucia and the rest of the English-speaking Caribbean, our enslaved ancestors were freed in 1834, a year after the official proclamation.
๐๐พ The formal end of slavery in the Spanish-speaking countries of South and Central America occurred during pivotal independence movements which began as early as the 1810s, with slavery ending in most of these countries by the 1850s. Slavery in Puerto Rico ended in 1873, and in Cuba in 1886.
๐๐พ After a 10-year transition period from the initial proclamation, enslaved persons in Suriname and the Dutch Antilles were freed in 1873.
๐๐พ In 1888, Brazil was the last country in the Americas where slavery came to an end.

Juneteenth (June 19) commemorates the end of slavery in the United States which is an important part of this timeline. Occurring in 1865, this places the US as one of the last countries to end slavery in the Americas.
This TedX animation was beautifully and intentionally crafted and gives a comprehensive overview of the end of slavery in the United States and the continued fight for racial equality for Black Americans to this day.
Imagine reading a long, intense novel. The main conflict is resolved towards the end, but you donโt reach the final chapter until much later. This last chapter contains crucial information that ties everything together, providing closure and a deeper understanding of the story. Without reading this chapter, you can't fully grasp the significance of the resolution.
Similarly, while the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, it wasn't until June 19, 1865, that the last enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom. Juneteenth represents that final chapterโwhen the promise of emancipation truly reached all enslaved African Americans, providing closure and a fuller realization of freedom. Just as the final chapter of a book is essential for complete understanding, Juneteenth is crucial for acknowledging the true end of slavery in the United States.

Do you want to know more about Latin Americans this National Latin Heritage Month?
- How patterns of five centuries of exploitation impact us today?
- Why Brazil is the only country that speaks Portuguese in South America and has the largest population of blacks outside of Africa?
- Why the Tupac Amaru Rebellion forces us to reasses the role of the Catholic Church and its influence in South Americans today
- How afro-Latinos conspired to overthrow the colonial monarchy
Iโve put a reading list of excellent books on Latin America. You can use it to celebrate Latin heritage month, start a book club or train the future leaders and trainers. #openveinsofLatinAmerica#exile#racialmigration#frontiercitizenship#blackinLatinAmerica#latinheritagemonth
