The world’s first cross-border CO2 transport and storage facility – Northern Lights – is completed and ready to receive and store CO2, and was officially opened today by Norwegian energy minister Terje Aasland in Øygarden, near Bergen ✨ This marks an important milestone for the global development of a carbon capture, transport and storage (CCS) business model 🚀 It opens a value chain for the decarbonisation of European industry and energy and shows the role that we and our partners are taking in developing low carbon solutions in the energy transition 🇪🇺 Large scale CCS will play a key role in the energy transition and in reaching Paris Agreement goals, as it offers a solution for large and hard-to-abate industrial emitters (including the cement and fertiliser industries) that need to decarbonise their processes 🏭 We have around 10 CCS projects in operation or under development globally, and already have nearly 30 years of safe CO2 storage experience on the Norwegian continental shelf 🌐 🇳🇴 The established Northern Lights value chain and experience from the project will also be valuable in maturing and scaling up future CCS projects. 𝐆𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 = 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 📉  Cutting emissions from our oil and gas operations is an important measure to reduce our net carbon intensity towards 2035. The Bacalhau field in Brazil is a world-class asset in the Brazilian pre-salt area, and will utilise one of the world’s largest floating production storage and offloading vessels (FPSO) when it starts production in 2025. Back in 2018, our research and development department in Trondheim, Norway identified that combining gas and steam turbines – so-called combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) technology – could be an important measure to reduce the project’s CO2 footprint 👣 This is done by using the heat generated by the first turbine to generate steam to power the second turbine, making it possible to use excess heat that would otherwise be lost ♨️ The CCGT technology will help the Bacalhau project reduce production emissions by about 110,000 tons of CO2 annually – leading to a 25% reduction in CO2 production emissions over the field's lifetime. 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐎𝟐 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞?  Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) is a process where CO2 is captured and stored while energy is created from biomass. Because plants absorb CO2 as they grow, this process effectively creates negative carbon emissions 📉 More of these projects are needed in order to meet global climate ambitions. So we’re happy to announce our agreement with Ørsted to purchase 330,000 carbon dioxide removal credits (330,000 tonnes of CO2) over a period of 10 years in connection with their Avedøre combined heat and power plant near Copenhagen. The plant utilises sustainable biomass from waste straw as a feedstock. The CO2 captured from the power station will be transported overland to Ørsted’s CO2 hub in Kalundborg, Denmark, before further transportation to the Northern Lights CO2 storage facility offshore Norway for permanent storage under the North Sea seabed 🇩🇰🇳🇴 We are developing the Northern Lights project together with Shell and TotalEnergies. While we see carbon credits as an important way to stimulate investments in carbon reduction and removal activities, at least 90% of our scope 1 and 2 emissions reductions towards 2030 will stem from measures taken in our own operations in areas including production, transport and shipping. The Johan Castberg floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) is now anchored at the field in the Barents Sea, where it will produce for 30 years. A big thank you to Ocean Installer and all the vessels towing the FPSO safely home to the field and mooring it to the seabed.  Now it will be hooked up to the subsea field and we’ll prepare for start up of the field towards the end of the year.  The Norwegian supplier industry has accounted for more than 70% of the total deliveries to the Johan Castberg project. In the operating phase, 95% of deliveries are expected to come from Norwegian suppliers. The Northern Norwegian project content is estimated at about 40%, and every third Johan Castberg employee lives in Northern Norway 🇳🇴 Find out more 👉 https://bit.ly/3ZrHANR Vår Energi Petoro

Electrification is the most effective measure for achieving the goal of cutting emissions from Norwegian oil and gas production in half by 2030. That’s why we’re proud to announce that Troll B and C are now partly powered from shore⚡ This partial electrification reduces annual emissions from the Norwegian continental shelf (NCS) by 250,000 tonnes of CO2 📉 The CO2 reduction is equivalent to about half a percent of Norway’s total annual emissions 🇳🇴                                                                       In addition to cutting emissions, Troll West electrification has generated substantial business activity for Norwegian suppliers, and will help us continue to deliver large volumes of high-value energy produced with very low emissions for many years to come.
