The project site is in Embu County.” “According to the tender documents, the chosen consultant will handle engineering and design duties, in addition to project and contract management.” “The authorities are seeking bidders who have designed and supervised a minimum of two #gridconnectedPVprojects, each at least 50 MW in size, within the past decade. The tender requires expertise in overseeing, installing, and integrating two #batteryenergystoragesystems of at least 5 MWh each, along with a track record of supervising two 132 kV #substations and #transmissionlines. Experience in Sub-Saharan Africa is also a prerequisite.” “KenGen is financing the project with funds from France's Agence Française de Développement. Natural gas and renewables firm Botala Energy Ltd and Sub Saharan Africa-focused solar developer AAAS energy have signed a pact to explore the feasibility of installing up to 250 MW of solar capacity at an energy hub under development in Botswana. The contemplated project will be realised at Botala’s Leupane Energy Hub and Industrial Park near the town of Palapye. The site could end up accommodating up to 500 MW of solar energy and 200 MW of gas-fired power generation. The two partners will now work to finalise a bankable feasibility study (BFS) by the end of 2024 to determine the project cost, along with the ownership and funding structures for a final investment decision (FID). Part of the BFS will also consider possible off-takers in the Southern African region as well as the potential for developing the project as a merchant power station. The outcome of the study will ascertain whether the companies will potentially embark on further solar capacity development under similar terms. The Leupane Energy Hub is positioned to emerge as a cornerstone for renewable and gas-fired power generation in the region, according to Botala. ZESCO Calls For Expressions Of Interest For 7.5MW Solar PV Power Plant In Zambia ZESCO Limited, the Zambian power utility, is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) from Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) companies for the development of a 7.5MW on-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Kasupe, Lusaka Province. The project aims to leverage renewable energy sources as part of ZESCO’s strategy to diversify and enhance the energy mix. The National Energy Regulator Of South Africa (NERSA) has unveiled its success in registering 124 new generation facilities during the third quarter (October to December) of the 2023/24 Financial Year. The cumulative capacity of these facilities stands at an impressive 605MW, with a total investment value of R7.8 billion. The breakdown of the registered facilities reveals a strong inclination towards solar energy technologies. Solar PV dominates the list with 122 facilities, contributing 604MW to the total capacity. These facilities are spread across nine provinces, with the Western Cape, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal leading in numbers. However, concerns were raised by Mr Nhlanhla Gumede, the Regulator Member responsible for electricity regulation at NERSA, about the absence of storage in a significant number of registered facilities. He emphasized the importance of coupling variable energy source facilities with battery storage to mitigate the ‘California Duck Curve.’ The breakdown per province shows the Western Cape, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal leading in the number of new facilities, while North West, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga top the charts in terms of installed capacity and investment value. Notably, the North West Province generated the highest investment cost for the quarter, reaching R3.5 billion, driven by mining activities in the region. The growth of the global solar photovoltaic (PV) sector has resulted in a manufacturing overcapacity, allowing PV module prices to decrease by close to 50%. Some are concerned about the fact that it would be challenging for South Africa to compete with China for solar PV module manufacturing.
