🇷🇴 Elections seem to be the only topic of discussion these days, with people sharing their support or disapproval of last week's results.
While an infinite number of issues need to be unpacked, from the wins of far-right parties across EU member states to the uncertainty of what the European Parliament elections mean for the future presidency of the European Commission, the grievances of minorities are not acknowledged.
The Roma community encompasses a significant percentage of the population of EU member states, with approximately 10 to 12 million Roma in Europe, around 6 million live in the EU.
In Romania, around 8.3% of the population are Roma. However, for the first time since 2004, no Roma representatives have been offered a seat in the only democratically elected body in the EU.
Despite having one of the biggest communities of Roma citizens in the EU, the representation of the ethnic minority is lacking in all aspects in Romania. Not even a single candidate was Roma.
This is a stark contrast with the representation of the Hungarian minority in the country, exemplified by the importance of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania in both local and European politics.
