Physician Leader, Educator, and Mentor with a passion for improving patient care, access, and equity
Conflating initial certification and maintenance of certification is problematic and disingenuous. Initial certification is rigorous and well-researched, with solid evidence behind its current structure supporting its function. MOC however has no evidence to support its claims, and its current structure is capricious - robbing physicians of their time and money without showing them or their patients its value. The ethics become even more murky when we find out that revenue from MOC is necessary to fund the Board as an organization . The National Board of Physicians and Surgeons offers an excellent, relevant and useful solution.
"Board certification enhances patient safety because I have to maintain the current trends and read up on journal articles and the standards of what the practice is doing currently... it’s a lifelong learning process." Manage your hospital’s anesthesia services with confidence // I give hospital executives the tools and knowledge they need to make informed operational and financial decisions
What usually takes 90 days, took 24 hours! Anesthesiologists are a critical part of any hospital’s staff. Anytime you’re putting someone to sleep, you need them on board. When placing a doctor, there’s usually a 90-day credential period before the anesthesiologist can begin working in that specific facility. It happened that one of our cardiac-trained anesthesiologists was out sick. It was a weekend when no surgeries were scheduled, but an emergency could’ve occurred. We found a qualified replacement for them and then worked consecutive hours to make it happen! In just 24 hours, a new anesthesiologist was on the job! #anesthesia #consulting

Assistant Professor, Yale School of Medicine and Director, Patient Quality and Safety, St. Raphael's Campus, Yale New Haven Health. Experienced Leader, Author, Speaker, Consultant.
Dr. Sharer provides some great insight here. I tell medical students who want to become anesthesiologists the specialty is awesome--the credit for doing what we do---not so much. BUT, and I say this with a smile, it is an awesome specialty, and it is fun. First, we are masters at understanding physiology and pharmacology. We have to be. Second, we must know something about everything in medicine--peds, OB, critical care, trauma, medicine, pulmonary, cardiac, renal....you name it, our patients have these conditions, and they impact our care plan. Other specialties do not necessarily require this breadth of knowledge across all disciplines. Third, our patients come first, surgeons, second, hospital third. That is the order for our priority with a 'customer' mindset. Never, ever compromise patient care. Lastly, we are a service specialty. Patients do not show up wanting anesthesia--they need it. The surgeons need it. The hospital needs us. And at the end of the day, we are team members, so it behooves us to treat everyone in our space with kindness and respect. I am a firm believer in building good relationships with everyone. Great care is created with a positive mindset and being approachable, available, and affable.
Insightful article written by Dave Sherer, MD. Anesthesiologists need to remember that we have multiple customers.
