🌟 Thrilled to share that I’ve completed the California Environmental Voters EdFund Ambassador Program! 🌿🌍 As a proud member of the WE CAN: Water Equity and Clean Air Now! campaign, I’ve been working on addressing severe inequities in water and air quality in the Central Valley and Inland Empire. Our mission is to empower youth to lead the charge on these crucial issues. The Central Valley and Inland Empire suffer from some of the worst air quality in the nation, primarily due to warehouse emissions that displace our communities of color. The long-term health risks are significant, and immediate action is necessary. We hosted multiple town halls in the Central Valley and Inland Empire, providing a platform for local voices to be heard and for us to collaboratively find solutions. Good news for the #GreatLakes! Hot off the virtual presses, we read 2,155 pages of Great Lakes #ClimatePlans so you didn't have to. What became clear is that #collaboration, #workforcedevelopment, #publicengagement, and stacking financial resources are all key to #ClimateAction. The Center for Community Systems at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has embarked on an ambitious partnership with the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico to enhance environmental conditions and energy efficiency in New Jersey and New York. Supported by a $10 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), this initiative is part of a broader effort under the EPA's Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Center (TAC) Program. NJIT's Center for Community Systems will utilize $1.5 million of this funding to establish a hub in New Jersey and New York, focusing on four counties in New Jersey (Passaic, Union, Middlesex, and Hudson) and seven counties in New York (Mohawk Valley and Capital Region). This hub aims to assist community leaders and nonprofit environmental groups in securing grants from the EPA and DOE. The support provided will include guidance in identifying and addressing environmental and energy issues, training through workshops, and technical assistance in applying for grants. This effort underscores the center's commitment to aiding underserved communities, particularly those facing environmental degradation. The collaboration between the Center for Community Systems and Inter-American University is a strategic choice, as both institutions fall within Region 2 of the EPA. This region includes New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and eight Indian nations.
