With the holiday coming up, I wanted to wish everyone a happy and healthy July 4th. The holidays are a reminder to cherish our moments with friends and loved ones. The sudden passing of my former Berkeley professor and colleague, Luca Trevisan, has reminded me of the importance of not taking for granted the time we have to reconnect with friends and family. With the sudden news, I wanted to share my recollections and his final inspirational talk, and I hope everyone has a chance to enjoy the holiday spending quality time with those who matter most! 🙏 𝐈𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐮𝐜𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐧 (𝟏𝟗𝟕𝟏-𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒): I had the privilege of taking a graduate class by Luca, and unexpectedly co-authoring a theoretical computer science (TCS) paper with him (story below). I’ve always admired Luca for his devotion and talent for TCS/mathematics, and for his friendliness and sense of humor. He was an inspiration in overcoming the challenges of originally being an outsider to the TCS community, and being one of the few openly gay professors at time, among other challenges. For those interested, you can listen to Luca’s own words in a memorable talk, which was given by a close colleague after his passing: https://lnkd.in/g8XFpsqS 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐲 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐋𝐮𝐜𝐚: Since learning about computer science, I always had a curiosity for TCS. Despite my interest, I never thought I should work in the field due its challenging nature, and the financial challenges that might come with having an academic career in TCS (especially coming from a low-income first-generation immigrant family). Thus, when I took a complexity class with Luca at Berkeley, it was more of a personal interest, and I did not have high expectations for anything resulting from it academically. As part of the class, we were asked to research and write about a topic in TCS, and I wrote some high level thoughts about why it seemed difficult to amplify the hardness of one-way functions. I didn't think any of my thoughts or writing was anything that could be publishable, but Luca saw something in my thoughts and asked if he could share the work with Hoeteck Wee in an effort to turn it into a formal proof and mathematical result. A few months later, we had a draft of a paper that was submitted and accepted to the Theory of Cryptography Conference (TCC), a well-known and respected TCS conference. In my mind, I had a thought that after earning enough financially to retire comfortably, I might return to my prior interest in TCS, and catch up on the latest in TCS from Luca. Although this is no longer possible, I’m grateful for having had the opportunity to have worked with Luca and witness his talent in mathematics/TCS firsthand. Luca, I hope you know that I greatly appreciated the opportunity to know you and work with you, among many others you impacted and inspired along the way. With fond memories and gratitude, - Henry

July is the month of 24 ×7 . On this Thursday, want to thank all those working around the clock to ensure that the businesses runs as usual. In TCS July month is celebrated as RiO month, RiO stands for Rigor in Operations. While we create awareness of various process areas in IT Operations and sophisticated tools, we also create awareness on the right mindset and discipline to work on critical production support. Human errors are one the most common causes for production outages. It requires a mindset to not make mistakes when handling critical systems. Few inspiration from game of cricket that most of us love. According to sources, in International cricket, Richard Hadlee, Imran Khan, Garry Sobbers never bowled a single wide ball in entire career. Kapil Dev, Dennis Lilliee, Lance Gibbs and Ian Botham never bowled a no ball. They are all legends of all time, must be because of the Rigor in them to not commit mistakes and their discipline.

This score reflects my dedication, hard work, and passion for excellence. It's a remainder that every step counts in the journey towards success. 👜 #TCSNQT #CareerGoals #MixedEmotions #AverageScoreButNotAverageEffort #KeepPushingForward.
