UK-based queer collective Big Dyke Energy has launched a fundraiser to preserve the country's LGBTQ nightlife scene and keep queer raves alive. The 'Save Our Spaces' campaign aims to raise £10,000 initially, with funds set to provide grants for struggling clubs and event organisers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In an effort towards safeguarding diverse nightlife offerings, these monies will help ensure continued access for all those within the LGBTQ community who have relied on such spaces as sanctuaries of self-expression. According to BDE member Shiloh Dobie: "Underfunded nighttime economies risk losing more than just dancefloors; they risk dismantling hotbeds for progressive social change." The initiative reflects a broader trend of grassroot efforts targeted at protecting marginalised sectors within hospitality from financial crisis due to measures against COVID-19 spread. As we continue navigating this challenging period together, let’s instigate more discussions about aiding our global hospitality industry. Facing similar challenges or want support in your course? Feel free to direct message us or schedule a zoom chat.

Throughout history, the Hospitality Industry has been holding a pioneering role towards minorities’ inclusivity, providing spaces for the LGBTQ to express themselves, a home for outsiders looking for a job. But there is still a long way to go, 57% of women still declare, they don’t feel safe in Festive Spaces. On another angle, in a recent survey in the UK, 36% of respondents claimed accessibility in pubs and bars was average. Could we do better? Ensuring bars, restaurants, clubs… are safe and open for all, is no longer just a nice-to-have, but a must-have. From navigating the treacherous terrain of discriminatory behavior to conquering the land of microaggressions, let’s explore how building safer and more inclusive spaces can transform a business into success. Head to SIP to discover more about this topic, from how to keep boundaries with customers, de-escalate conflict situations, to exploring various opportunities to bring diversity in your business. https://lnkd.in/e-SamsQV

Why Visibly Supporting Aboriginal Culture and Giving Back is So Important In today's corporate landscape, supporting First Nations culture and giving back to the communities from which it originates is more than a gesture; it's a commitment to inclusivity, respect, and positive impact. My experience with Aboriginal culture is that it is rich with ancient traditions and vibrant expressions. I have learned that it offers profound insights and beauty that enhance our collective understanding of heritage and diversity. By visibly supporting these cultural narratives, companies not only contribute to preserving and celebrating culture but also foster a workplace that values and embraces diversity. I believe that culture brings more connection, depth, and colour to our society – it is more fun too! Moreover, engaging with Aboriginal artists and their communities through corporate gifting not only supports and uplifts these talented artists, but also plays a crucial role in ensuring the continuation of traditional culture. At Koh Living, our in-house artists deeply value the opportunity to keep their ancestors’ stories alive – stories that hold profound, shared wisdom about Culture, Community and Country. These narratives are vital; they guide us toward a better future by emphasizing the values that bring meaning to our lives and connects us all. I feel that giving back goes beyond philanthropy; it is about creating lasting relationships and trust. When businesses choose to invest in Aboriginal products and initiatives, they are acknowledging and valuing the contributions of these communities. It is amazing to think that even the smallest gesture can catalyze positive changes, from economic development to cultural preservation, and enhance social equity. Incorporating Aboriginal gifts into your corporate culture sends a powerful message of respect and solidarity. It shows your clients, partners, and employees that your organization is committed to fostering inclusivity and supporting the rich tapestry of cultures that enrich our society. This dedication not only strengthens your corporate identity but also resonates deeply with a modern audience that values ethical and socially responsible business practices. What might change in our workplaces and communities if every business took steps to actively engage with and celebrate Aboriginal culture through their corporate practices? #TuiCordemans #KohLiving #Diversity #Culture

🌟 Honoring Juneteenth: Empowering Through Hospitality and Travel 🌟 Today, we pause to honor Juneteenth, a landmark in our history that symbolizes freedom and the end of slavery in the United States. This day is a powerful reminder of resilience, courage, and the ongoing journey towards equality. At the heart of our industry—the hospitality and travel sector—we hold a unique opportunity to drive social empowerment and make a lasting impact. Here's how we can lead the way: 🏨 Championing Inclusivity and Representation: Diversity isn't just a buzzword; it's the essence of a vibrant, innovative industry. By embracing inclusive hiring practices and cultivating environments where everyone feels welcomed and respected, we enrich not only our businesses but also the lives of our employees and guests. Representation matters, and it starts with us. ✈️ Fostering Cultural Exchange and Education: Travel is a bridge to understanding. When we promote and respect cultural heritage, especially the rich histories of African American communities, we foster a world of empathy and appreciation. Let’s use our platforms to educate and inspire, turning every journey into a story of connection, learning and respect. 🌍 Driving Economic Opportunities: Our support for Black-owned businesses and local enterprises can spark significant economic growth in underrepresented communities. By highlighting and partnering with these businesses, we can channel resources and attention their way, paving the path for sustainable development and prosperity. 🤝 Engaging with Our Communities: True impact starts at the grassroots. By participating in local initiatives, forming strategic partnerships, and organizing community events, we strengthen our bonds and support meaningful causes. Let’s make our establishments hubs of dialogue, unity, progress and endless opportunities. As we celebrate Juneteenth, let’s commit to leveraging the power of hospitality and travel to foster a more inclusive and equitable world. Together, we can champion change and empower future generations. #Juneteenth #SocialEmpowerment #DiversityAndInclusion #HospitalityIndustry #TravelIndustry #EconomicEmpowerment #CulturalExchange #CommunityEngagement #BlackExcellence #Unity

Our heritage is not only about where we come from but also about the values, stories, and traditions that shape who we are and how we contribute to our communities and workplaces. As we reflect on the unique cultures that form the fabric of our society, let's take pride in our differences while also recognizing our shared humanity. It’s in celebrating both our individual and collective journeys that we create inclusive spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. Sad, isn't, it when a US government entity has to enforce the law when the #ADA has been in place a long time. So much for touting #inclusion. Thank you, Lakshmee Lachhman-Persad, for sending a link I'd missed. Where has the #hospitality industry been in challenging this for so very long? Excerpt: "The allegations stemmed from a 2010 Justice Department regulation known as the Reservations Rule that clarified that the ADA requires hotels to provide reservations for accessible rooms on an equal basis with other rooms. A separate rule known as the ADA Standards for Accessible Design, which was also updated in 2010, mandates that hotels provide a minimum number of accessible rooms and offer choices of the types of accessible guest rooms. Under the agreement, Marriott International will pay a $50,000 civil penalty. Marriott-branded hotels will be required to accurately list their accessible rooms in the company’s centralized electronic reservations system and this information will be made available to major third-party hotel reservations systems. Hotel websites will list their inventory of accessible rooms in a single location. Marriott is also agreeing to make more accessible rooms available for reservation through its rewards system, the company will train its call-center employees* on handling requests for accessible rooms and it will track complaints from guests about issues with reserving accessible rooms. Meanwhile, Marriott-branded hotels will have to report whether they meet the ADA requirement for offering a minimum number of accessible rooms." *My hope: Marriott trains its branded-hotels' staff in sales and front desk, services and catering, to understand #accommodation. https://lnkd.in/eTGFCsi8 American Hotel & Lodging Association AAHOA HSMAI Travel Unity Tourism Diversity Matters PCMA Meeting Professionals International Destinations International ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership National Coalition of Black Meeting Professionals APIEventProfs International Association of Venue Managers IACC Meetings Jamie Shields Samantha Evans, ICE-CCP, CAE, MBA

The statistics don’t surprise #EventProfs. The negotiations by UNITE HERE in Vegas and Los Angeles show there can be a way to retain employees. Excerpt: “The most critical staffing need is #housekeeping, with 48 percent ranking it as their top hiring need.” If you’ve ever done this job (I did for a weekend) you understand why so many are injured. Are accommodations being made enough to attract and retain people who hadn’t worked in #hospitality? Or enough to lure back those who left? This addresses one segment of the industry; the others are not back to 2019 staffing levels.
