Building Common Futures, with Daan, Jelle, Steffan, Leo, and Evelien, working on energy system optimization. Focus areas: renewable gases, offshore wind, and the built environment.
Catharina Sikow (EC), Roxana Caliminte ( GIE), and Stefan Kapferer (50Hertz Transmission GmbH) on stage now, to discuss energy infrastructure. Catharina: We clearly recognize the urgency of grid expansion. We helped accelerate permitting, and we've recently published our Grid Action Plan. Roxana: It's my first time on stage at an electricity conference. I'm very happy, but I don't know any of you, and that's a problem. We aim to bring in the gas infrastructure to help address the infrastructure challenges, e.g. by transporting hydrogen throughout Europe. Stefan: I'm happy with Roxana's message. The required infrastructure investments are enormous. We need to cut costs, e.g. by standardization. Electricity consumption not growing as expected. Can we relax the supply chain a bit? #WindEurope2024

#EnergySecurity and #affordability – for me, these are the two terms that define the Handelsblatt Energie-Gipfel in Berlin today. 💡 Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck kicked things off. Three arguments in particular stuck in my mind: the positive effect of the functioning European electricity market on energy prices in this country, the importance of cooperation in Europe in order to achieve the goal of climate neutrality and that we overcome crises and challenges through creative work. In the discussion round with Jörg Kubitza Miguel Stilwell d'Andrade and Kathrin Witsch, it was important for me to realise that we have already achieved a lot: #electricity from #renewableenergy sources covered more than half of the electricity consumption for the first time ever. That is the market and not ideology, because renewables are cheaper than conventionally generated energy. There is no turning back from our path towards a green energy future and electrification. Germany's role as an important #energyhub in Europe is crucial for integrated energy markets, particularly exemplified by the North Sea's green powerhouse. Collaborative efforts in #offshore technology, such as the 2 GW standard for connection systems, lay the foundation for a fully meshed European cross-border HVDC offshore grid system, essential for tapping into the North Sea's wind potential. Speeding up the #gridexpansion, efforts focus on new acceleration potentials, standardized equipment, and innovative grid concepts, such as Europe's first hub systems in the Heide region and Rastede. Reconsidering overhead line technology for HVDC connections, instead of underground cables, is a cost-effective solution discussed in conversations between Stefan Kapferer and Klaus Müller. And together with Leo Birnbaum I see the need for a forward-looking regulatory framework that encourages efficient investments. Despite renewable success, the political agenda must prioritize building new, efficient power plants, initially with gas and later transitioning to green hydrogen, to ensure energy supply and security. Clarity on Germany's complete transition from coal by 2030, outlined in the 'Kraftwerksstrategie', is crucial for prompt tendering processes. 👍 #HBenergie 📸 © Handelsblatt Energie-Gipfel

Vice President, Europe at Breakthrough Energy. Previously, Director-General at European Commission. Views are my own, often rooted in 20 years of experience in public policy.
As I'm about to head to #cop28, I am more convinced than ever that the #greendeal is at a turning point. Lowering the cost of the #energytransition is now more important than ever. We simply cannot regulate ourselves to #netzero. As a matter of urgency, Europe needs a compelling #businesscase for #cleantech #investments.
