But what does this mean for #cleanenergy consumers? We’re joining forces to transform the way carbon-free energy (CFE) is bought, sold and tracked. GCs monitor CFE generation on an hourly basis, empowering buyers to select clean energy based on time and location. “In #collaboration with the Intercontinental Exchange, Inc. Carbon-free energy matched on an hourly basis? I believe this is huge! Hourly certificates could be the remedy to the long and painful corporate PPAs and open up access to renewables with low investment /low risk, helping corporates to reach their 100% clean targets. Moving to hourly certificates will enable renewable, hydrogen and storage assets to capture the spread between low and high-priced hours, making these assets highly lucrative. Market players will no longer question the commercial viability of renewables and gas and coal phase-out will become exponential. Does this sound like a dream? Indeed, but I believe this could become a reality in the next years. Let me step back and paint you a picture of the current issue. Typically, electricity consumers match their consumption on an annually basis with yearly certificates. This approach doesn't reflect the physical reality of the grids, with high levels of renewable energy at certain times and lower at others. The intra-day volatility was not present when the first carbon certificates market appeared 20 years ago. Today this is a barrier for further progress on decarbonization. With annual matching, a consumer can for example purchase all their certificates from a solar PV plant in summer and claim them against their consumption throughout the year. This is nowadays accepted by the standards and by the GHG Protocol Scope 2. But this approach carries a risk for companies following existing standards and claiming to offer 100% renewable energy products. There are increasing number of legal cases ruling out this method against companies as greenwashing and mislead of the public. Therefore, different stakeholders are interested in matching their power consumption with clean electricity generation on an hourly basis including corporates, institutions and hydrogen producers. We now need the right technology to track and match hourly certificates to their source and platforms that offer hourly matching of renewables are starting to flourish. Here are some examples: Good Energy based in UK offers a granular energy platform where customers can see the renewables they are supplied with 24/7 www.goodenergy.co.uk LevelTen in collaboration with Google and ICE is currently building a whole market infrastructure for trading and managing hourly certificates https://lnkd.in/diuz7mkV The company Renewabl offers a marketplace to find blockchain-backed certificates from a variety of wind, solar, and hydro in UK and Europe www.renewabl.com What this mean is that every MWh entering the grid produced by renewables will be linked to a certificate managed by a tracking system. The same for electricity stored or used to produce hydrogen. I believe this will transform the energy markets adding more transparency, increasing profits for clean assets, lowering the consumer energy price as we add real time value to the electricity and speeding up the coal and gas phase-out.

In times of high price volatility, low liquidity and credit risk, PPA pricing is all about a tough nut to crack: what are the appropriate discounts to price risks and costs correctly? 💡 The structure of the forward curve is a principal tool to assess trade offs and hedging decisions, and back in 2022 the phenomenon of extreme backwardation became more and more evident. 💡 The result? As shown in our 2023 European PPA Market Outlook report - the curve lost its flat shape, it meant that there’s was an increasing price disparity between near- and long-term futures contracts - which was mirrored in PPA prices of different tenor products. As the amount of consumer energy resources (CER) increases, it's essential that consumers can easily and confidently decide how they want to use their investments in ways that benefit and make the most sense to them. To help address this, the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) has just released its draft determination on unlocking CER through flexible trading.
