Another one of the Women in STEM spotlighted examples showcases the intersection between engineering and policy that keeps our lights on. We all want affordable electricity, and we all want a clean environment. We can do either of those easily on their own, but to do them both together--the way its done at Rainbow Energy Center? That's complex. People like Jen have to understand how to integrate the latest in environmental control technology in a way that achieves the objectives of protecting the environment but does so in a way that maintains their ability to provide the one of the cheapest (but most reliable) sources of baseload power in the country. You don't get that win-win easily, but we get it here thanks to another one of our Women in STEM.

The International Women in Engineering Day highlights the important role of women in the engineering field. This Women’s History Month, we are shining a spotlight on Elevate’s brilliant female engineers who have thrived in this industry despite the systemic odds stacked against them. A study led by the University of Hull in 2020 reveals that 90.7% of engineers in the renewable energy sector are male, an inequality that we cannot easily resolve but can at least alleviate by celebrating female accomplishments in this field. Kymoya Maxwell is our skilled Graduate Electrical Engineer. From a young age, she had a way with numbers and equations, so when it became time to choose a career path, she eagerly embraced engineering. She took all available STEM subjects in school before enrolling at a BTEC college, where she was the only woman in class. The gender disparity continued at university with only 5 out of 90 students being female. After graduating in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Kymoya joined Elevate where she is continuing to learn about the intricate world of crossed wires and clean energy. The lack of female role models in engineering really weighed on Kymoya throughout her professional life, leading to low self-confidence and a fear to present ideas during her first few months at Elevate. This is why she hopes she can be one for young aspiring female engineers, aiming to mentor student interns when she reaches a more advanced career rung in the future. Kymoya has never regretted her decision to join engineering. It has sharpened her critical thinking skills and fostered a fascination with finding out how things work. Now when she encounters a problem, her first thought isn’t panic, but rather: “How do I solve this?” Working in the sustainability sector has also increased her awareness of her own carbon footprint and she always looks for ways to be more environmentally friendly in her daily life, like switching off lights when leaving the room. A woman's journey in the field of petroleum engineering typically begins with pursuing a relevant educational background, often obtaining a degree in petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, or a related field. During her academic journey, she may encounter a gender imbalance in the classroom, but overcoming such challenges can strengthen her resilience. Entering the workforce, she may face stereotypes or biases due to the traditionally male-dominated nature of the industry. However, her dedication to her work and continuous pursuit of knowledge can help break down these barriers. Building a professional network, participating in industry events, and seeking mentorship from experienced professionals can provide valuable guidance and support. As she progresses in her career, gaining hands-on experience in various aspects of petroleum engineering, she may find opportunities to contribute to innovative projects and technologies. Women in this field often play key roles in developing sustainable practices and addressing environmental concerns associated with the industry. It's crucial for her to be proactive in advocating for her contributions, highlighting achievements, and participating in initiatives that promote diversity and inclusion within the industry. Over time, she may become a role model for aspiring female engineers, inspiring others to pursue careers in petroleum engineering and helping to reshape the industry's gender dynamics. While the industry may have historically been associated with physical demands, it's the sharp minds, problem-solving skills, and innovative thinking that truly drive progress. Emphasizing the strength of the mind underscores the diverse and valuable contributions women make to the field, breaking down stereotypes and paving the way for a more inclusive and dynamic future in petroleum engineering.
