Advanced Training for Ships Operating in Polar Waters

Enclosed spaces! I’m happy to notice concerted efforts across the industry to address the issue of our seafarers becoming casualties inside such spaces which exist on all kinds of ships. The 2nd Industry Workshop on Enclosed Spaces at OCIMF Headquarters is well underway with participation from industry NGOs, Administrations, Companies and more. After the 1st Workshop (held on 1st February), all participating stakeholders took away some action points. On behalf of International Chamber of Shipping, I will be presenting my views on mandatory training in relation to enclosed spaces within the 1978 STCW Convention and Code and what can be done to make these more robust. An outcome from today’s discussions will be towards reviewing the competencies and KUPs detailed within the STCW Code for all seafarers.

A reflection by one of our facilitators, Mark Phillips, as he finished Day 1 of a 2-Day NTS Workshop for Colas Rail in Rugby. "For me, the reason 'Why' students are attending is important for their buy in, without rapport our attempts to make the learning sticky, will fail. Our ambassadorship for the One Percent Safer Foundation in UK and Ireland is also really important to me. Their research shows on average 2.73 million people die in workplace accidents or related illnesses every year. That number is hard to wrap our minds around, so is 1 person passing every 10 seconds simpler to grasp? Often students think people die because of work in 'other' countries without HSE regulations. Then the discussion moves from accidents to illnesses in the UK. Sadly, rarely is there a course when students haven't lost colleagues due to ill health from their life style which is shaped by work Maybe shift work or high stress etc. This causes a realisation that if nothing changes for them, this could be their fate also. Now what can Non-Technical Skills do for me? How do I reduce the risk of me being a statistic. And we are off, each journey is custom curated for those in the room, it supports their needs and wants.
