[Hyundai hydrogen trucks hit 10m km of emission-free rides in Switzerland] Decarbonizing effects of Xcient Fuel Cell equal to planting 700,000 pine trees Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차)’s hydrogen-powered truck Xcient Fuel Cell has surpassed 10 million kilometers in accumulated mileage in Switzerland, the South Korean automaker announced Wednesday. The milestone came three years and eight months after the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen-electric truck began to hit the roads in Switzerland in Oct. 2020. Currently, there are 48 Xcient Fuel Cells in operation in the central European country. The truck, which is equipped with a 180-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell system and a driving motor boasting a maximum output of 350 kW, can drive up to 400 km per charge. Hyundai Motor pointed out that its hydrogen-powered trucks have significantly reduced potential carbon emissions as they only emit water from driving unlike diesel-powered trucks producing carbon dioxides from driving. Hyundai Motor’s XCIENT Fuel Cell Trucks Achieve Record of 10 Million km Total Driving Distance in Switzerland — a testament to the world-class hydrogen fuel cell technology’s long-term reliability. This achievement was made in just three years and eight months since the XCIENT Fuel Cell began fleet operations in Switzerland in October 2020. This success signifies a milestone for the mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell electric heavy-duty truck, with the XCIENT Fuel Cell surpassing the remarkable cumulative driving distance of 10 million km. Currently, a total of 48 XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks are in operation in Switzerland. The XCIENT Fuel Cell is powered by two 90-kW fuel cell systems (180 kW power) and a 350 kW e-motor, giving a maximum range of over 400 km. Compared with a fleet of regular diesel trucks, which would emit approximately 6,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide over an accumulated distance of 10 million kilometers, the XCIENT Fuel Cell electric truck provides a significant reduction in carbon emissions. Hyundai’s Global Hub for Hydrogen Vehicles is here. Here's everything you should know 👇 Hyundai Motor Company (현대자동차) is transforming its Jeonju plant into a global hub for hydrogen vehicles. The strategic move will help Hyundai stay ahead in the growing FCEV market. The plant will expand its hydrogen lineup with Xcient-based trucks, refrigerated trucks, and fuel cell tractors. New express and low-floor hydrogen buses are also in the works for 2027. This transformation comes as Hyundai faces increasing competition from Chinese and European rivals. Chinese companies captured over 50% of the domestic electric bus market in 2022. Imported trucks closely matched the sales of Korean-made trucks in 2023. But Hyundai is investing heavily to maintain its leadership in the hydrogen vehicle sector. The Xcient, launched in 2019, is the world's first mass-produced fuel cell electric heavy-duty truck. Hyundai XCIENT achieves new record, proves long-term reliability on Swiss roads. By ERIN KILGORE Hyundai’s hydrogen truck clocks 10 million km total driving distance in Switzerland. The Hyundai XCIENT fuel cell electric heavy-duty truck achieved a new record, recently surpassing a cumulative driving distance of 10 million kilometers (6.2 million miles) in Swiss fleet usage. The company achieved this feat in only three years and eight months, since the hydrogen truck started its fleet operations in Switzerland in October 2020. This marks a significant milestone. According to a recent Hyundai Motors news release, surpassing the cumulative 10-million km driving distance in Swiss fleet usage is a testament to the world-class hydrogen fuel cell tech’s long-term reliability. This milestone is significant not only because it’s evidence of the long-term reliability of the Hyundai XCIENT, but because the achievement is expected to contribute to lowering carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. This reduction in CO2 emissions is compared to the amount of carbon that is absorbed every year by an estimated 700,000 pine trees. Comparatively, a fleet of standard diesel trucks emits about 6,200 tons of CO2 over an accumulated distance of 10 km. Switzerland has 48 Hyundai XCIENT trucks in operation. Each of these hydrogen trucks is powered by two 90-kilowatt (kW) fuel cell systems, a total power of 180 kW. They’re also equipped with a 350-kW e-motor, which delivers a maximum range of more than 400 km (248.5 mi). Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell Trucks Achieve 10 Million km Total Driving Distance in Switzerland – Image source: Hyundai Motors What’s more, all Hyundai XCIENT fuel cell heavy-duty trucks operating in the nation use only green hydrogen. This means, in addition to no carbon emissions from the exhaust pipe, no carbon is emitted during the production of the hydrogen that’s used by the truck. The use of the green H2 contributes to creating an eco-friendly hydrogen value chain in Europe. The milestone helps Hyundai to continuously improve hydrogen vehicle tech. This milestone is also beneficial for Hyundai because it can analyze the trucks data in terms of: Mileage Hydrogen consumption Fuel cell stack performance With this data, Hyundai Motors can continue to improve its hydrogen fuel cell technology and apply it to various other kinds of vehicles. https://lnkd.in/dvRXQdS2
