🔋 Exploring the Intricate Chemistry of Battery Leakage 🔬 Ever wondered why old batteries tend to leak? The answer lies in the world of chemistry! 🧪 The chemicals responsible for generating electricity within batteries also produce hydrogen, which can exert pressure and lead to seal breaches. In a typical alkaline battery, a potassium hydroxide gel serves as the conductive electrolyte. During the chemical reactions within the gel that power the battery, a small amount of hydrogen gas is generated. Over time, this gas buildup creates pressure within the sealed battery cell, eventually causing minuscule ruptures along the metal casing seams. While the potassium hydroxide reacts harmlessly with CO2 to form potassium carbonate, the pressure from the hydrogen gas can cause leaks. Remember, potassium hydroxide can be caustic and cause skin irritation, which is why it's essential to handle leaking batteries with care and dispose of them properly. #chemistry #battery #recycle https://lnkd.in/eH5rUzh7
