“You’ve got big shoes to fill”. How many times have you heard this, especially if you are part of a generational business? But as Roshni Nadar Malhotra unabashedly says, “Why should I fill shoes? I stand on his shoulders!” referring to her father, Shiv Nadar, founder of HCL Enterprise. At a recent FLO Chennai event, Roshni shared how leadership at HCLTech isn’t defined by gender or age but by accountability, transparency, delegation and the mantra that the institution is bigger than the individual. On a personal level, if she had one extra hour each week, she’d spend it in India’s forests, immersed in nature. Reflecting this deep passion for nature and wildlife, she established ‘The Habitats Trust’ in 2018 to protect India’s natural habitats and indigenous species for future generations. For me personally, one of the most profound takeaways was her perspective on failure: "Fail better." It's such a powerful way of normalizing failure, of not letting it hold you back. Instead of fearing it, we should embrace it as part of the learning process. By shifting the mindset to "failing better," you create room for growth, for taking risks, and for pushing boundaries—without being paralyzed by the fear of falling short. It’s a call to action to give it a shot, to experiment, and to learn through the experience. This resonated with me deeply, especially in my own journey at Arun Plus TMT. After pursuing an education in architecture, I dove headfirst into the marketing space, often questioning whether I had the expertise or experience. But now, I’m inspired to own the room, embrace challenges, and take risks—knowing that every failure is an opportunity to learn, grow, and fail better.
