Studies indicate that by 2035, each highway service station in Germany will need to offer at least 30 MW to meet the demand for electric trucks and passenger EVs. Medium-voltage connections, with a maximum capacity of around 25 MW, are insufficient for future e-mobility needs. High-voltage connections, enabling over 100 MW of charging power, will be essential for supporting the growing fleets of electric trucks. โšก However, upgrading the grid is a slow process. Martin Konermann, Managing Director of EnBWโ€™s network operator Netze BW GmbH, emphasizes the urgency of building the necessary grid connections now to support the future increase in electric trucks: "Taking into account eight years of planning and approval and two years of construction time, a high-voltage power connection with the associated charging park takes approximately 10 years to implement. Now is the time to build the necessary charging infrastructure along highways." The transition to electric trucks is not just about the vehicles but also about ensuring our infrastructure is ready to support them. Now is the time to invest in both grid upgrades and innovative solutions like battery storage to pave the way for a sustainable future. ๐Ÿ‘‡ Want to find out more about the electric truck transition? Like the transition from fossil to renewable electricity generation over the last 25 years, the electrification of the transport sector and especially the transition to electric trucks is a marathon and not a sprint. It is crucial to prepare and execute on the needed grid infrastructure in order to enable the whole transport sector to electrify in the coming years. It is great to see that Netze BW GmbH and EnBW Energie Baden-Wรผrttemberg AG are at the forefront to drive this transition.
