As a venture capitalist focused on innovation in the AEC space, I have a huge opportunity to see patterns both on the problems in the industry and the inability for the industry to absorb solutions that are disruptive. In an effort to support the AEC industry in a moment of time where between AI and new business model creation, many are lack strategic direction. I wish I had more hours in the day but I don’t. I have been building frameworks, education and best practices to advise the AEC industry for the past 11 years since leaving GA Techs incubator ATDC Started with advising ENR500 firms on startup investing and external innovation. Then scaled to launching Shadow Ventures to provide startups funding to innovate our industry while having great participation with our ENR500 LPs. Then AI came along and the phone rang (figuratively, mostly emails and texts) from ENR500 leadership to help create a strategy to thrive with AI (shameless book plug in comments). This business got very busy but hinged on my personal involvement all along the way, hence we stuck with the ENR500. Today I have an exciting announcement that we are expanding our team. Why should you care? If you aren’t an ENR500 firm, we can now help. We have more capacity beyond me and the current team AND new areas of expertise that was needed. #AI and #ColdOutreach - a match made in heaven?💸 No matter the tech that you use, you need human brains behind it. Check out this email I received.👇 What's wrong with it? Let's see: 1. First word of the subject line should be capitalised (minor issue) ☝️ 2. #innovation #startups - why use hashtags in an email?! 😖 3. 1st para praises me on fundraising efforts for YAi Digital. Sounds a little cringe but is relevant. But the 2nd part leaps straight to my other company - Yay!Starter Marketing - so there's no connection whatsoever with the first opening lines🤔 4. It proceeds by offering us help with SEO, leads & web design (the services we provide).🤦♀️ That's a lot of time and effort wasted for people (and robots) involved... Lessons learned: Apart from the obvious like checking your spelling & grammar and leaving hashtags to Instagram, make sure you know how to use your AI tools. Sure personalisation at scale is great but it all falls apart if you're not doing any quality control. For example, some people like me have more than one role, poor buggers, so you've got to sense check what your AI sales insights tool suggests to you! And of course, do your research so you don't end up selling snow to eskimos.❄️ #growthgaffe

Pay creators for their time, knowledge, and their community's value! And B2B/D companies - stop sending content creators your brand's stickers, sweatshirts, and t-shirts in the hope that they'll do free work for you. When I saw this post come up on my feed...I had to immediately send a connection request to Tim Benniks. This has been on my mind for years. This is not limited to AI, I've experienced creator pay disparities in the deep tech and dev spaces for years (and that's where a lot of AI marketers are coming from). So many SO MANY brands *want* this kind of content, *want* these kinds of partnerships. They are seeing the way that influencers are impacting conversions for B2C brands. The problem is B2B/D brands will not 1) invest in the creators properly 2) invest in the programs internally. It is a recipe for disaster. To create content that is very highly dependent on relationship building requires full-time brain power and is so often left to someone who is doing "influencer relations" as a fractional part of their work with little/no budget. Brands end up working with less-than ideal creators with communities that don't reflect their targets, seeing no ROI, and wondering why their programs are failing or KPIs can't be met. It's mind boggling in 2023, almost 2024! If you have engineers on staff, developer advocates, docs engineers...you should understand the kind of time and effort and cost that goes into what you are asking people to first learn, then build (not to mention film and edit and share with their community that has taken years to build and foster an intimate relationship and trust with!). #EndOfRant #Influencermarketing #B2DMarketing #B2BMarketing #CommunityManagement #DeveloperRelations

Dear marketing folks, this helps you to prep for your meetings. $1000 = very cheap $5000 = average $10000 = what many bigger creators ask Prices are like this especially for the social proof. If someone like James Q Quick makes a video for you and you put it on your homepage, developers will trust you immediately.
