Review Alert! (Re:) Claiming Ballet Edited by Adesola Akinleye 'This anthology is a valuable tool for engaging new audiences in ballet; it is a call-to-action for younger generations to connect ballet with their lived worlds. It will be of interest to academics, researchers, or students working in the fields of dance, theater, performing arts, and cultural studies—especially within the intersection of gender, race, and dance. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to acquire a broader knowledge of ballet as a global art form with the potential to become a key representation of our multicultural society.' - Gonzalo Preciado-Azanza, Journal of Dance Education Available in paperback here 👉 https://lnkd.in/ecAAA_n

In the world of ballet, dancers perform with a grace that seems almost otherworldly. Each movement is a careful blend of strength, precision, and fluidity, creating an elegant tapestry of motion that captivates audiences.💃 👯 One of the most captivating aspects of ballet is the seamless flow of movements. Dancers transition from one position to another with a fluidity that appears almost effortless. This adaptability is a valuable trait for leaders as well. In the fast-paced corporate environment, the ability to pivot and adapt to changing circumstances is crucial. Leaders who embrace change with the fluid grace of a ballerina are better equipped to guide their teams through transitions and uncertainties.✨ Ballet is rarely a solo endeavour. The beauty of a performance often lies in the harmony of the ensemble, with each dancer contributing to the collective artistry. In the corporate world, the most successful leaders recognise the importance of teamwork. Transform your next team or corporate event into an unforgettable experience by infusing it with the enchanting essence of art and dance. Does Perfection Have To Be The Measure Of Ballet? Is it possible to imagine the ballet world without a primary teleology of aesthetic perfectionism and a baseline of low self-worth? Is it possible for our culture at large to stop conceiving of art and fame in this way?
Beyond the Exaltation of the Individual Dancer

The MoBBallet Roll Call is being revised and expanded! In 2015 the Roll Call began as a crowd sourced database of the names of professional Black ballet dancers. Founder Theresa Ruth Howard wanted to make this list a Black ballet Wikipedia, and we gradually expanded to design biography pages or as we call them “Artist Pages” for every name on the list. This is no easy task given the lack of documentation on Black participation (overall) but specifically in areas like the classical arts. We conducted deep dive research earlier, and more obscure artists, and even gathered information from their former colleagues to cobble together even the slightest of bios for them. For more contemporary artists we pulled existing bios in company, personal websites, and festival or guesting listings. Although we do not function like Wikipidea where anyone can make changes at any time we encourage artists to view their pages and should they like to make amendments (update information, add or change photos and links) send all the information as you would like it to appear and we will place it in the queue to be applied. We issued a call to action encouraging dancers to submit the information they would like on their page. Unfortunately there was little response. However we do not let that stop us. That being stated, we once again encourage artists to share their information by emailing If you would like your name ADDED to the Roll Call go the Roll Call on mobballet.org and choose ADD YOUR NAME TO THE ROLL CALL. (it will not automatically populate) If you would like to update your MoBBallet Artist Page please send: Updated bio, links, and pictures to: [email protected] Know your History- Learn your Legacy- Carry it forth... #mobballet #mobbsters #blacksinballet #wearenotunicorns #doingthework #BHM #blackballerinas #doyouknow? #blacksinclassics

Dance Data Project® Data Byte // Women-Founded U.S. Ballet and Classically Based Companies 2024 The Chicago Opera Ballet was the first American ballet company and was established in 1910. In 1929, Dorothy Alexander was the first woman to establish a ballet company when she started the Atlantic Civic Ballet, later becoming the currently active Atlanta Ballet. This achievement helped pave the way for future women-founded ballet companies. It is important to note, many of the female-founded companies were established before important laws were enacted to protect women’s rights. This includes laws like the Equal Pay Act (1963) which ensured women were paid fairly, and the Equal Opportunity in Education Act (1972) which provided equal education opportunities regardless of gender. Additionally, women weren’t granted the right to open a bank account or apply for a credit card on their own until 1974. These instances highlight the significant obstacles many women faced and overcame to establish successful ballet companies. Must all lines be straight? In exploring different styles of movement, I discovered the beauty and precision of ballet. Its principle of perfect, straight lines intrigued me, so I tried to blend it with my traditional African dance style. But something felt off. The expressive fluidity that once told my stories so well began to feel constrained. I was sacrificing my originality for a borrowed perception. African dance, rooted in stories and culture, flows freely with the rhythm of our spirits. It tells tales of our heritage with intricate torso movements, bends, and turns that embrace the earth. Despite the allure of straight lines, this rhythm is what makes our dances unique and sought after worldwide. Even ballet dancers strive to replicate the nuanced expressions of African movement. We can admire the beauty of other styles without losing our uniqueness. It’s a reminder that our tradition is our strength and that originality shines brighter when we stay true to ourselves. Educators and families, this is an important lesson for our young people. You can only be yourself, everyone else is taken. Dance remains a vivid expression of our identity, carrying our legacy through every step. Embrace your rhythm and dance your own story. It’s what sets you apart. -------------------------------- I invite you to join me on this #journey as we explore the #EssenceOfLearning to #OptimizeHumanPotential. #PhDofLife #AfricanExcellence #DoctorateOfLearning #LearningJourney #LearningToLearn #EducationForAll #LinkedforAll

Recently, I had the chance to witness the most popular ballet in Geneva - "Swan Lake" performed by the Royal Classical Ballet. It was a sheer delight to experience the brilliance, charm, synchrony, and storytelling in one of the oldest art forms. As I navigate through a transitional phase in my life, I am more open to learning and motivation, no matter where I am or what I am doing. Ballet, as an art form and discipline, imparts valuable lessons that extend beyond the dance studio. From discipline and dedication to creativity and artistic expression, here are some key learnings from ballet that can be applied to life in general: - Discipline and Dedication - Physical and Mental Strength - Precision and Attention to Detail - Posture and Body Awareness - Teamwork and Collaboration - Resilience in the Face of Failure - Expressiveness and Communication - Time Management - Creativity and Artistic Expression - Cultural Appreciation - Goal Setting and Achievement - Mind-Body Connection What life lessons have you learned from an art form? Share in the comments below or in a personal message!! #lifelessons #ballet #artform #discipline #teamwork #mentalstrength #communication #mindbodyconnection
