The New York Times reporters who wrote the scathing article last month on the traditional PBMs are back with a new piece that discusses how the FTC has now taken up the cause. The FTC just released a report that strongly criticizes the Big 3 PBMs for their anti-competitive practices that frequently drive up prescription drug costs instead of helping to lower them. Here are some key passages of today’s Times article: • The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday sharply criticized pharmacy benefit managers, saying in a scathing 71-page report that “these powerful middlemen may be profiting by inflating drug costs and squeezing Main Street pharmacies.” • The regulator’s study signals a significant ramping up of its scrutiny of benefit managers under the agency’s chair, Lina Khan. It represents a remarkable turnabout for an agency that has long taken a hands-off approach to policing these companies. • Benefit managers are supposed to save everyone money. But in recent years, the industry has grown more consolidated and has taken more control over how patients get their medicines, in a shift that critics say contributes to driving up drug costs. If you would like to learn more about how EmpiRx Health’s clinically-driven pharmacy care solutions help you to keep your members healthy while substantially reducing costs, visit our website at www.empirxhealth.com. #NewYorkTimes #FTC #PBM

A key part of our AI-powered Clinically™ - Powered by EmpiRx Health™ platform is EmpiRx Health’s proprietary population health engine. This powerful technology solution enables our clinical pharmacists to analyze member care needs and identify opportunities for therapy and cost optimization. Here's an example of Clinically at work. EmpiRx Health’s Population Health Management engine identified the following issue: a member taking Trikafta for Cystic Fibrosis was also taking a medication that could heighten Trikafta's blood levels, potentially resulting in adverse effects. Our clinical pharmacist evaluated the situation, adjusted the Trikafta dosage, and collaborated with the prescribing physician to ensure the member’s safety. This change resulted in an annual savings of $155,231 for the plan sponsor and eliminated possible member health risks. This is just one example of EmpiRx Health's Clinically being an essential ‘ally’ in helping plan sponsors to holistically care for their members to improve their overall health and strengthen benefits plan results. This morning, The New York Times published a devastating exposé on the traditional PBM industry. The article shines a blazing spotlight on the traditional PBM practices that prioritize rebate-driven drug volume to maximize profits. Practices like these are hurting plan sponsors, members/patients, community pharmacies, and many other stakeholders. Clearly illustrating why a clinically-driven, customer-first pharmacy care alternative is more vital than ever, below is how the NY Times described the self-dealing practices of the Big 3 PBMs: “The job of the P.B.M.s is to reduce drug costs. Instead, they frequently do the opposite. They steer patients toward pricier drugs, charge steep markups on what would otherwise be inexpensive medicines and extract billions of dollars in hidden fees, a New York Times investigation found.” Read the full article here. https://lnkd.in/eU6p-vFb EmpiRx Health’s clinically-driven pharmacy care approach is by far the best alternative to the legacy PBMs, who prioritize their own profits at the expense of their customers.
