It’s not all about cars going electric ❌
We live in a time where it seems like almost anything is possible. As we shift away from petrol and diesel powered vehicles, various modes of transportation are embracing electrification with remarkable success.
North America recently celebrated the unveiling of its first-ever electric tugboat, "HaiSea Marine," in Vancouver, Canada.
This groundbreaking project is a result of a fruitful partnership between Seaspan, a Vancouver-based shipyard, and the Haisla Nation, representing the indigenous Haisla community.
The innovative vessel, designed by naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd., was constructed in Turkey, a global hub for tugboat production.
The Haisla Nation's insistence on a zero-emission tugboat was instrumental in pushing Seaspan to create HaiSea Marine, a game-changer for multiple reasons.
Unlike traditional tugboats with polluting diesel exhaust stacks obstructing visibility, HaiSea Marine boasts a clear view of its surroundings, essential for ship-docking operations.
Its electric motor enhances responsiveness and significantly reduces underwater noise, minimizing disruption to marine life.
While the initial cost of building HaiSea Marine exceeded that of a traditional diesel tugboat, the reduced operational costs are expected to reach breakeven in just eight years.
What's more exciting is that HaiSea Marine is setting a powerful precedent. Multiple electric tugboats are currently in production, reinforcing the belief that this model is the future of maritime transportation.
Another win for e-mobility ⚡️
