Let's talk about events. Events — big, small, ones you organize, ones other people organize — are both an important component of community building for open source projects and a way for companies, including open source companies, to get leads and get customers. I'm not an event expert, so I talked with Brian Proffitt of Red Hat, who is. We recorded an episode of The Business of Open Source at an event (Open Source Summit EU), and talked about lead-gen events versus community events, how to think about ROI of events, especially if you need to justify event attendance to a superior, and what to do to increase the likelihood that you'll actually get the ROI you want from an event. Check out the episode here: https://lnkd.in/e4k3SX28 And speaking of events: Are you going to All Things Open? If so, come to my talk on Tuesday and reach out if you'd like to chat. https://lnkd.in/eP2HH925

If there are major IRL events that your community members will be at, then consider doing of the following: — Have a presence there with a meetup, formal or casual, it’s the thought that counts and that you’re bringing people together from your digital space in-person. ➡️ You can partner with companies on these to help minimize the expense to each party. — Create a channel for your members to join for the respective event(s), allowing them to connect and coordinate with peers independently of anything you plan (or entirely without you if you won’t have an activation there). Community Events = DREAMS 🤩

Looking to start a successful meetup group? Don't just start with the technicalities. Start with your "why". Why do you want to start a meetup? - To connect with like-minded individuals? - To learn from the best in your industry? - To create a supportive community? Whatever your why is, hold on to it for dear life. It's the passion, the heart behind the group. Now, let's get technical: 1. Define your meetup topic and audience 2. Create a name, description, and branding 3. Pick a date and location 4. Create a launch strategy 5. Promote and execute your first event But always remember: The "why" is what drives you. It's what will get you through the inevitable challenges of event planning. Once you've got your "why" figured out, everything else falls into place.

Events must start thinking like their attendees. If events started seeing things from their attendees' perspective, we'd have a whole new type of events. Next week, Rosie Hawkins and I, along with our attendees, will deep dive into this topic. Here's the the session outline: 1/ What events have you attended where a community was created as a result of the event? 2/ How can event organisers measure the impact of community engagement at their event? Are there existing platforms or do we need to create them? 3/ What if your event doesn’t need community? Define the type of events you create: community and legacy impact-driven or focused on brand building and revenue generation. Be part of this forward-thinking, next level conversation of where we can take our events - we want to hear from the people on the ground! 📅 When and where? 25.10.2023 | 12:00 CEST | ONLINE Excited to see you there! 👇 Link to register in comments.

I want to share a concept/format discussion we have had in our organization – twoHundred. As many other event companies, we've played with the idea of blending face-to-face events with online setups – the hybrid event concept. While these hybrids offer convenience and reach, in our eyes, they miss the heart and soul of pure face-to-face gatherings, where you truly connect with your audience – the entire audience. The spontaneity of in-person exchanges cultivates richer interactions and genuine bonds, networking, and trust building. Something we have concluded that virtual settings struggle to capture. Furthermore, our conversations circle round the possible situation that hybrid setups risk diluting the event's energy, leaving online participants feeling disconnected and harder to engage with – after the event. Without that face-to-face spark, the trust-building and lasting connections are compromised. While hybrids cater to diverse needs, they can't quite replicate the magic of a fully in-person experience. Just sharing our POV

Forget one-and-done events. 2024 is all about building real, lasting connections that thrive beyond the conference hall Create a space where people feel valued, not just another attendee. Ditch the impersonal vibes and foster genuine connections. Think of small talk, shared experiences, and an environment where everyone feels welcome to be themselves. Unforgettable events equal sticky communities. Make your event an experience, not just a presentation. Spark meaningful conversations, encourage interaction, and leave people wanting more. When they feel supported and connected, they'll be eager to stay in touch long after the last keynote. Make 2024 the year your event becomes a community that truly connects. #EventMarketing #EventPlanning #EventNetworking #EventEngagement #CommunityBuilding #BeyondConferences
