𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗗𝗘𝗘𝗣 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 is more than a summit. It’s a space to connect with experts who are ‘walking the talk’ of resilience through practices that help us connect with ourselves and the world we are part of. On 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝟭 of the summit, Amanda Blake, PhD, author of “Your Brain is Your Body” shared how developing embodied awareness increases our capacity for being resilient. In her session 𝙀𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧, Amanda underscored rest as an essential ingredient in our resilience equation. She pointed out an insidious problem in our current cycles of rest and activity – that we are mostly interacting with machines and trying to keep pace with “machine time.” She explained: “A machine can be always on, with enough electricity, with enough fuel. But that attempt to keep pace with machine time interferes with our capacity for embodied self-awareness. It interferes with our capacity for experiential interconnectedness. And it interferes with our capacity for resilience.” She pointed out the key in this tech-driven world is to use tools but not let them use us, so rest and connection (to ourselves, to others, to nature) need to be built into our routines: “We can’t get there without being in these healthy cycles of activity and rest. Always ‘on’ will interfere with experiential interconnectedness, and our sources of resilience. So, we need to prioritize that cyclical process of slowing down, of getting quiet in certain ways. Not long now until the second Social Impact in the Regions conference. This year in Kempsey, NSW 4-6 September. You may not know about the event - when I left my senior role in regional economic development I really wanted to create a place for regional practitioners to come together to connect, collaborate, learn and share resources. My vision was to establish a national event, starting close to home. I put $120K on the line, and held my breath - thank goodness year 1 broke event - year 2 has just hit the same benchmark. Why would I do something so potentially stupid? Because I'm so tired of seeing the disadvantage recycled in our regional communities, tired of us not having adequate nor sustainable resources and really concerned about the wellbeing of the people who really care and are out there slogging it out every day, sticky taping slim resources together just to provide basic support. I believe when we come together and realise our problems really aren't that different that we can come up with solutions together, we can share resources and we can support one another. This year the conference has been designed with the community of Kempsey. We've pulled together unlikely venues, we've activated local businesses and people to get involved - there is even local produce being grown right now for the delegates to enjoy. The economic estimate to the local community is $840K ! I really believe our regional communities deserve more - and this is my contribution. 🤔 Should Europe start consolidating some of its tech conferences? One of the benefits of conferences is to bring a relevant community together, but after last week where there were more than a dozen conferences for tech investors alone, it's starting to feel a bit OTT. 🚀 It was certainly an action-packed week, meeting old friends and making new ones in London, Berlin and Madrid. We hosted an LP dinner, contributed to a couple of investor panels and provided a preview of our upcoming CVC report. I met one brave VC at South Summit who had managed to fly around Europe and do 5 capital cities in 5 days! In every conference, there are always a combination of old colleagues to meet up with and new people to connect with. It’s always a whirlwind of activity, generally useful, sometimes inspiring, but usually leaves me exhausted. There was a time in my career that I felt like my entire job was just going to conferences. I started to resent them and avoid them wherever possible. Then COVID hit and we had a break from the churn.  But now, as a freelancer, I have the luxury of being able to choose which conferences I attend with deep care and consideration. And so it was, that I came to the Shift the Power summit, my first conference since late 2019. Taking place this week in Bogota, I’ve been meeting old friends, allies, and building a new community: as near to a heartfelt family reunion, with new spouses and children and extended family…. but without the crazy uncle. Its been wonderful, too, meeting up with so many RINGO friends with whom I usually only work with online, like Jimm Chick and Juan Carlos Lozano H. pictured here. Yesterday, Day 1, of the summit, admittedly left me shattered. I hadn’t been feeling well but I persevered through the day merely because of the warm sense of being amongst people who give me oxygen, ideas, energy and love. I don’t use that word often in a work context, but I can wholeheartedly say that the room at the summit is filled with love.  On seeing me not at my best, many people I encountered offered me their country’s remedies: the electrolytes from the Americans; the mysterious purple gel from a Costa Rican colleague; and of course the famous Columbian coca tea of the host country.  It seemed they all worked: Day 2 of the summit has not only nurtured me physically, but mentally too. The conversations I’ve been involved in have included how to influence funders more effectively; how to shape and nurture the movement so that they have more influence for political change; and how to build a genuinely connected and coordinated movement. Twenty-seven years working in civil society and there is still so much to learn. I’ve been struck by the lack of cynicism I encounter in other spaces; and the distinct lack of the ‘we can’t do this because’ attitude you get in large bureaucracies or amongst people who are just worn down by the system. The #Shiftthepower community is one of optimism and of people who get on and get things done, whether the conditions are perfect or not. I love the entrepreneurialism, and the phrase Jenny Hodgson from the Global Fund for Community Foundation uses: “movement generosity,” It’s here in spades.  And so too…is love.
