Tashkent International Investment Forum concluded with $26.6 billion in signed agreements, an almost 2.5x increase from the previous year. The largest investments include Saudi Arabia's DataVolt pledging $4 billion in direct investments for urban infrastructure and a green data center in "New Tashkent", ACWA Power - Central Asia's commitment of $6.2 billion and UAE's AMEA Power $1.1 investments into renewable power generation in Karakalpakstan. #Uzbekistan has proposed a joint venture with #China and #Kyrgyzstan for the construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan (#CKU) line. The joint venture, which can also count on the support of China and Kyrgyzstan, would also become the manager of the line. According to a study published by The World Bank, "some 56% of the world's population - 4.4 billion people, currently live in cities. This trend is expected to continue, with the urban population more than doubling its current size by 2050, at which point nearly 7 of 10 people will live in cities". Cities are playing an increasingly important role in the fight against climate change because their exposure to climate risks and disasters increases as they grow.   That's why educating our children is so important. Yesterday, SAMRUK-KAZYNA and Azerbaijani Investment Holding (AIH) forged a strategic partnership agreement to establish an investment fund. This significant pact was inked during the state visit of the President of Kazakhstan to Azerbaijan. The newly established Fund aims to channel investments into projects that foster economic growth in both nations. Additionally, initiatives to bolster the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route are on the agenda. Moreover, a meeting was held between Azerbaijan Investment Holding (AIH), the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), and Kazakhstan's Samruk-Kazyna Joint Stock Company. Led by Ruslan Alikhanov, CEO of Azerbaijan Investment Holding, Rovshan Najaf, President of SOCAR, and Nurlan Zhakupov, Chairman of Samruk-Kazyna's Board of Directors, the gathering discussed matters arising from the strategic partnership agreement signed between AIH and Samruk-Kazyna on March 11. The subsequent collaborative steps to be taken were discussed, following the participation of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and President of Kazakhstan Kasim-Jomart Tokayev in the signing ceremony. Vinaka vakalevu Jenny Chu and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) team for organising a fantastic Pacific Business Opportunities event in Nadi this week. As well as a great event it was a good opportunity to reconnect with some of the old SPIES - South Pacific Indigenous Engineering Students/SPPEEx - South Pacific Professional Engineering Excellence crew - Nitesh Prasad, Vincent Lobendahn, Anna Aiolupotea. The Pacific region is facing some big challenges at present and I was impressed with the willingness from Development Partners, Government Agencies and the private sector to discuss these challenges openly and look for opportunities to address them. A couple of key takeaways I had were: - the need to better discuss and allocate risk through procurement - the challenge of effectively engaging local suppliers through this investment, including appropriate design and specifications - the general level of infrastructure investment going into the Pacific It's great to be helping ADB with this in a small way on the procurement side, and that our efforts are going into the right areas.
