NURSING HOMES AND NASCAR
A continuation of a previous story… 2 weeks ago, I wrote a story about changing the outlook of my day thanks to a simple conversation and connection with a resident that enjoys NASCAR.
I doubt that many follow the sport, but last week, Ricky’s driver won. Kyle Larson dominated the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, powering his way to his first victory of the young 2024 NASCAR season.
As Larson crossed the finish line, I couldn’t help but to feel happiness for Ricky back at the facility. All proud sports fans know, that when your “team” or in this case, “your driver” wins - “you win.” I knew that Ricky was watching the race back at the facility and vicariously “winning” due to Larson’s performance. It made me emotional. So I impulsively purchased a Kyle Larson t-shirt for him so he could show his pride on race day.
Yesterday, I gave him his gift and in typical fashion, he was beyond grateful.
All of us understand as human beings, that one of the most rewarding feelings in the world is gifting something of importance to someone - even if that gift is $25 and made of cotton. That shirt was more than a shirt. It symbolized: pride, victory, and love.
We all know that nursing homes are a business of hospitality and healthcare. Yet, my drive as a leader continues to be making the human connection. My daily intentions are to make people feel: engaged, encouraged and empowered. If I accomplish that, I was victorious.
As far as I’m concerned, Kyle Larson can win-out the remainder of the NASCAR season - for Ricky.
