My First Few Weeks of Internship My internship at the Form Annex Associates began on the 28th of September, 2023 and it has been an eye-opening experience. My first few weeks spent there have in many ways replanted me in the basics of Architecture. During this time, as I was seen to be proficient in the necessary CAD software, I worked across four sub-projects for a large-scale church project - doing sectional drawings, working drawings and finishing up all the necessary work for each project. My work input cuts across a Sister Conventry, a Guest House, a Residential Home, and a Chapel. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with sound senior colleagues who constructively criticise my work, send me back to rework, and challenge me to be better. Sometime last week, Yusuf Amoo mentioned at the end of a workday that I was doing great work and my smile stayed up through the day. I consider it a blessing that the team balances constructive criticism and praises well. — — — Principle 7 from my present read ("Why Didn't They Teach Me This in School" by Cary Seigel) at the Cowrywise Ambassador’s Book Club says “You take away more from your first couple of jobs than you give." This has strongly influenced how I have gone about work these few weeks. In his words, "Your first jobs are usually learning experiences during which your employers benefit less from your contribution than you do from theirs." We take more than we give on our first jobs — we are basically (sometimes 😣 ) being paid to learn. So I am learning to maximize this opportunity and the time I have. When I have questions, I ask and as they are answered, more conversations I would not have ordinarily had with my senior colleagues are initiated. From next month, I will begin site work and I can't wait to share that journey with you. What is/are the principles guiding your day-to-day living at this moment? I'm sure they will be invaluable.

From what I have learned at my internship with New View Design, there are so many different aspects of this career. Technology makes it a lot easier. They use google based resources like slides and sheets to share information between the designers, builder, and the clients. Resources like AutoCAD make it easier to project specific designs and ideas. While finding products on the computer is helpful, it is even better in person. Elevate your architectural internship by drawing on-site! Being "on-site" is not limited to project sites, so... Anytime you're outside - You're on-site. Not all #internships may include project site visits within the first few months but don't let that hold you back, visit your nearest built/on-going buildings and start sketching what you see! These are sketches from a precedent site visit, done yesterday during lunch, with colleagues. ↳ on paper: drawn on-site but cut short because we had to leave. ↳ on tissue: drawn from memory just before eating (channeling the creatives who draw on serviettes when out with other creatives) - it's a real thing. 😂 There are many sketches, but I'm sharing these ones because they show how spontaneous and loose sketches can/should be. Architecture Students: Summer internships are being posted; here are five things I wish I had done during my search. ☀️ It's that time again – summer internship applications are opening up, and it's time to decide where you're going to spend those precious summer weeks. In architecture, a bad choice isn't necessarily going to set you back, but a good choice can help you leapfrog your career forward. 1️⃣ Treat this search like you are looking for a full-time job, not just a summer internship. If you do well and they like you, they may extend an opportunity to continue to work there while you are in school or after you graduate. 2️⃣ Given #1 above, be sure that you not only like the work that the firm is doing, but you also enjoy their company culture. 3️⃣ Be sure to prepare to interview potential employers as much as they interview you. Consider what you want to learn (realistically) within a summer, and make sure what they will have you doing as an intern will help you do that. 4️⃣ It's OK to ask, and you should ask - if you can reach out to others in the firm and have conversations with them about what it's like to work there. 5️⃣ Always ALWAYS follow up via email (or be a dork like me and write a handwritten card in the lobby to give to the front desk on your way out) and reiterate your interest in working for the firm. It leaves a positive impression. Bonus!!! ✨An Internship is also a GREAT time to pursue other potential career interests you may be interested in pursuing. The recent article on 'Unpaid Architectural Internships in India’ by ArchitectureLive! has sparked a crucial discussion within the architectural fraternity, and we cannot thank them enough for it. We applaud and appreciate their effort and courage to speak so boldly about this issue. #UnpaidInternships has been an ongoing issue within the #architecturepractice, and sadly continues to persist. Under the name of #passion for work, or invaluable work #experience, #exploitation and #unfairness are rampant. There is no denying, that architecture practices have to invest time, energy, and resource in training interns. But isn't that a part and parcel of the process? The most important question here is, don't the #interns add any value to the firm? While the standard market rate is a myth within architecture, an acceptable one should at least be unanimously acknowledged. Taking one step forward, we would like to turn the pyramid of hierarchy around and ask all the architecture interns for once, what does fair pay mean to you?
