One of the few industries with the potential to have a true water positive impact on the planet is oil and gas. Produced water can be treated to brackish or better quality and returned to the hydrologic cycle for the first time in millions of years. While this article touches on some of the research in this space there are still some issues with the reporting. Professor Hardberger's comment about what the Clean Water Act contemplated is contradicted by the earlier paragraph about EPA rules around the 98 Meridian. The leftover fracturing chemicals discussion shows a lack of effort to understand the technical aspects about what is actually being proposed by beneficial reuse treatment. The "leftover chemicals" are typically only present is very early flowback period of a well's life. The water from this part of the well life is very rarely captured for reuse in operations let alone for treatment for beneficial reuse, because of additional cost and effort to treat. Instead, this would be part of the volume of water that remains targeted for injection disposal. I understand as a technical expert it is difficult to summarize complex process in short articles, but the fear mongering that is present in this article is poor research. USEPA Method 1633 - Final for Aqueous Matrices! We've been expecting the 4th draft of Method 1633 for PFAS to be published this summer and now it's happened. What's a bit of a surprise is that this version says the method is now final for aqueous matrices: wastewater, surface water, and groundwater. What does this mean for the regulated community? In April, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published their Steam Electric Power Effluent Limit Guidelines (ELGs) Final Rule for FGD wastewater. The rule focuses on zero liquid discharge (ZLD) for coal-fired powerplant Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) wastewater. Heartland utilizes a suite of on-site treatment technologies to reach regulatory standards and site Zero Liquid Discharge (#ZLD) targets. Flue gas desulfurization (#FGD) purge water is a byproduct of the process used to remove sulfur dioxide from exhaust flue gases in coal fired power plants, containing various contaminants including heavy metals and salts. Treating this #wastewater is necessary to meet environmental regulations and prevent pollution of water bodies. Researchers developed a Fenton-like catalyst, Fe3-HT, using iron and walnut shell #biochar to efficiently degrade formaldehyde in #wastewater. Improving PFAS remedial groundwater results using mass flux mapping FluxTracer can now be used on PFAS, not just chlorinated volatile organic compounds. Knowing the mass flux is critical for engineering a successful PRB treatment approach, whether it be for PFAS or any other contaminant class. This parameter determines the placement of amendment(s) needed to achieve the project goals and the dosing needed to attain them at the lowest possible cost. Mass flux is directly correlated to amendment consumption, dictating the length of time a remedy will remain effective.  

Down the Memory Lane: Case Study 8 AgroRemed Meets a Challenge: Contamination reduced by 95% in 20 days. A pilot project was assigned to IMS Environmental, VA for the cleanup of absorbed phase concentration of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons-Diesel Range Organics (TPH-DRO) under a new Corrective Action Plan (CAP). IMS selected AgroRemed as a method for bioremediation of the contaminants at Tidewater Terminals, VA. The pilot project was carried out at a 900 square feet area at the Tide Terminals that would allow monitoring on all four phases namely i) vapor phase, ii) dissolved phase, iii) adsorbed phase, and iv) free phase. AgroRemed was applied on the soil and values of the contaminant were to be determined on two occasions one on the 10th day and the final event on the 20th day and the pilot to be closed. The results showed an almost 90% reduction in the adsorbed phase and on 20th day, the reduction in TPH was between 91% to more than 95%. A copy of the report is attached. https://lnkd.in/eihaQHwS
