Happy Vesak Day. To all Buddhists and those celebrating the occasion. Vesak Day is a special day that honours Buddha’s birth, his teachings, enlightenment, and death. While I am not a Buddhist, I count myself a fan of his lessons on life and wisdom. Key among these are: (i) attachment is at the core of our sufferings, big or small (ii) the impermanence of all things (iii) the equanimity in losing the need to have control (iv) the importance of self-restraint in our thoughts, desires, and actions (v) the daily cultivation of kindness, patience, forgiveness and compassion Taken together, they form a flame that gives off lambent light that warms the heart and radiates outwards as love. And the ultimate object of Buddha and his teachings is something that is more needed today than ever. Peace. Hence, I wish you Happy Vesak Day once again.
