On our January Insight: Introducing New and Updated GRI Sector Standards for Sustainable Reporting The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards, which are globally recognised as the most widely used sustainability reporting standards, are continuously evolving to meet the changing needs of businesses and stakeholders. Beginning of 2024, new sector standards for sustainability reporting are now active for the coal and agriculture, aquaculture and fishing industries, as well as updated standards for biodiversity. The GRI Sector Standards are internationally recognised and authoritative guidelines that enable organisations to report their impacts on the environment, the economy and people in specific sectors. The recent additions and updates to the GRI Sector Standards suite include the GRI 12: Coal Sector 2022, GRI 13: Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fishing Sectors 2022, and GRI 101: Biodiversity standards. By adhering to these standards, businesses that operate in the coal, agriculture and fishing sectors can ensure that their operations are more sustainable and contribute to the global efforts to combat climate change. 𝗛𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗔𝗟𝗦 For more than 50 years, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has brought together millions of people around the world every 5 June to focus on environmental action. As a global leader in environmental testing, ALS is passionate about enabling our clients to create a more sustainable world, and we are proud to celebrate World Environment Day. UNEP’s theme for World Environment Day 2024 is a focus on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. In line with this theme, ALS is highlighting our efforts to address growing global concern about per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as ‘forever chemicals’, used in the manufacture of stain-resistant, water-resistant and non-stick consumer goods. PFAS have been found to accumulate in food, water, soil, the air and even our bodies. They do not break down in the environment, raising concern about potential negative health impacts. For these reasons, there have been increasing efforts around the world to identify, understand, and eliminate PFAS. As early pioneers of PFAS testing, ALS is committed to advancing continuous innovation in PFAS testing techniques.
