"Jonathan, it seems you will start selling certificates..."
This was a humorous comment sent from a long-time friend after I uploaded, yet again, another one of the certificates I recently earned as a stepping stone (pre-PhD) intern.
I can guess his comment echoes the thoughts of quite a number of my connections across social media platforms. Hence, the a need for a bit of background information.
A few months ago, I began my PhD journey as a Steppingstone intern at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior and the University of Konstanz. The internship period was meant for me to write my proposal, get familiar with the Kamran Safi lab, and acquire some credits and skills via selected courses and workshops, among other things, in preparation for the PhD program. The aim is to prepare and equip the candidate adequately for the PhD program. Hence, the name "steppingstone".
The internship period was quite educational and eye-opening for me. It is not so much about the certificates posted, but the actual new applicable knowledge learnt from the scientific/grant writing workshops, poster presentation workshops, scientific design courses, and first aid wilderness courses, just to mention a few. You will agree with me that this knowledge will be relevant in the course of my PhD. Plus, the understanding and support I keep receiving from my lab mates and Supervisor.
This, to me, is what counts!
Did you go through a similar process (or not) during your own academic journey and how did it impact you?
