A new Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) 💚 is out! The LCA conducted by Fraunhofer UMSICHT shows that #Clariant's organophosphorus #FlameRetardants, like Exolit OP 1400, have lower environmental impacts across their product life cycle than conventional brominated alternatives. These types of flame retardants are used in plastic components, such as #ElectricVehicle parts or USB-C connectors. Paper title: Variable Flux Machines: A Review found here: https://lnkd.in/d_mJ-qTG   A glimpse of what’s in the paper: Due to #climatechange challenges & significant increase in the cost of rare-earth magnets (PMs), #electrification of transportation utilizing e-machines that doesn’t employ PMs can be a potential solution. However, conventional traction PMSMs exhibit constant magnet flux that causes high back EMF when operating at high speeds. A field-weakening current is therefore required to reduce the magnet field & increase the operating speed range. Hybrid excitation can also be used to resolve this but it’s prone to significant copper losses, thus reduced efficiency. Conventional machines also, at high speed & low torque conditions, have reduced efficiency. Efficiency under such conditions is crucial in #evehicles since they’re (conditions) often experienced during highway cruising. To address these, Variable Flux (Memory) Machines can be used. They use LCF magnets, thus potentially reduce dependence on rare-earth magnets, & leads to applications in which variable-speed is necessary. Since #EVs have various driving conditions, employing a VFM for traction guarantees a better flux-weakening capability, thus a wider speed range as well as larger higher-efficiency operating region. The ease of demagnetization of the LCF magnets enables variation of the magnetization states & memorization of the magnets’ flux density. VFMs can achieve higher efficiencies comparable to PMSMs under same design constraints in the high speed and low torque conditions. Also, rather than continuously supplying a field weakening current, a short d-axis current pulse is injected... Kindly refer to paper for more info.
