This is an unfortunate reality for too many kids across the country. Our client Seattle Children's is on the frontline. Unfortunately, 2022 was a record breaking year for mental and behavioral health services, and not in a good way. A theme was unnecessary, lengthy hospitalizations due to lack of community resources. In fact, a third or more of the beds in their ED were regularly filled with children "boarding" awaiting appropriate care last year. Congress must do more *specifically* for kids, guidance to states is not enough. The children’s mental health crisis is on-going, and children’s hospitals are often the last resort for parents and caregivers who cannot access emergency mental health care services for their children and teens. To better understand this crisis and what’s happening in children’s hospitals across the nation, The Wall Street Journal spoke to Texas Children's Hospital, Cook Children's Health Care System, Cincinnati Children's, Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida, OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and others to highlight the boarding crisis and challenges our ED doctors face while trying to keep these children safe. Why are physicians happy with the status quo? According to recent research in JAMA, relative to non-physicians, US physicians are less likely to vote, attend public meetings, volunteer, or otherwise be politically engaged. Per the authors: "Physicians could play a greater role in influencing health-related public policy given their expertise and socioeconomic opportunities". This leaves a vacuum that allows for stigma and misunderstanding about healthcare - particularly for those who are homeless or have mental illness and drug addiction challenges. ⬇️Listen below to hear the full clip: https://lnkd.in/gAbaUeCu 🎧Full podcast: https://lnkd.in/g6vYQgAg 📑Reference: https://lnkd.in/gtB8x5VF

Superb initiative. Good work, Paul...
This week has been #childrensmentalhealth week. A campaign led by Place2Be. The theme is #myvoicematters. This is incredibly important in the context of #familylaw. The voice of the child should underpin all work professionals do in the family justice world. Where the child is old enough, that voice should actually be heard. Child inclusive mediation is great for this, but we need to do more and ensure all processes are child inclusive when appropriate. Even when the child isn’t old enough, their ‘voice’ should still feature - we need all professionals to advocate for that and to speak on behalf of children, even to our own clients. I also firmly believe that we have a role to play in helping children find their voices, as well as considering what their internal voices are saying to themselves. This is vital when that child is experiencing a change in family circumstances. We can and we must do more. I had the privilege of speaking with Angharad Rudkin earlier this week. We spoke about generational cycles of trauma. How the children of yesterday that experienced trauma are now the adults of today struggling with an array of issues, ranging from addiction, to being perpetrators of abuse, to seeking out unhealthy relationships and so on. We can make a difference. We can support and empower children to break the cycle. We can help them find positive voices. As part of our commitment at Boyes Turner to working in this way, we purchased 100 copies of Angharad’s book. A book aimed at helping children directly through a turbulent time in their lives. We are sending these books to school, gp surgeries and other places where children who need them can access them. It is just a start, but if it reaches one child and helps them it will be worthwhile. If anyone wants to suggest any schools or other establishments that could benefit from such a book being in their resources, please comment below ⬇️ We will pick at least five at random to send a copy to. #childrenfirst
