2024 will be the year of Austrian Airlines: New aircraft, new routes and now also the adjustment of the aircraft fleet in regional traffic. As Austrian Airlines CCO Dr. Michael Trestl reported in a press release today: "On some regional routes, demand has not returned to its full extent after the pandemic. In order to be able to connect these routes to our Flughafen Wien - Vienna Airport hub in the future, we need adapted capacity structures. I am delighted to have found a proven partner in this challenging segment in BRA - Braathens Regional Airlines." The decommissioning of the BOMBARDIER Dash 8-400 was already controversial before the pandemic, as some very successful routes prefer fewer seats but require more frequencies. By renting the ATR 72, this economic problem has now been solved and the offer can be adapted to actual demand. Another issue is and remains the takeover of the first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which, as is well known, should have been taken over at the beginning of the year. As has become known, this has been delayed because both Boeing and the seat manufacturer are behind schedule with production, as COO Francesco Sciortino confirmed to me in an aeroTELEGRAPH interview last December: "The idea was that Lufthansa would receive new aircraft from Boeing to replace the Dreamliner going to Vienna. But now these aircraft are not arriving on time, which is why we have to readjust the takeover of the 787". The first rumours that Lufthansa was looking for a replacement soon emerged, as the company more or less confirmed: "This year represents a significant turning point for Austrian Airlines: Fleet modernisation and growth with the Boeing 787-9 begins. We are currently working on a solution to increase our capacities earlier than expected". The Lufthansa Group has not been idle and has apparently and has apparently been successfully looking for a replacement, which, although not officially confirmed, could now be crowned with success in March and April with the takeover of two former Boeing 787-9s (serial numbers 62735 and 62736) from Vietnamese Bamboo Airways. The rapid introduction and entry into service of the first 787 is important because, on the one hand, Crew have to be trained and more capacity is required with the start of flights to Boston, on the other hand, the introduction of the Dreamliner into the Austrian Airlines fleet represents a major technical and economic step that will be rewarded with the favour of passengers. Last week, Lufthansa releast their 3rd best result in history, with Swiss International Air Lines contributing overproportionally. In the light of the very good results, I had the opportunity to discuss the outlook of the #airlineindustry with Moritz Kaufmann, editor at the reknown Swiss newspaper NZZ. The article (link below) was published in German, so here's a summery of my points. In 2023, #aviation almost reached the pre-Corona level in terms of the number of passengers carried, while capacities have not yet returned to the level of 2019. While #Airlines are celebrating record results worldwide due to tight #capacities and high #yields due to pent-up demand, the picture will change in the coming years. Globally, the unbroken global #wanderlust will continue to ensure good earnings for the industry in the coming months. With the closure of new post Corona CLA , which have not yet been priced into the 2023 results, continued higher #mro (maintenance) costs and costs incurred for #sustainability as well as significant capacity increases will result in lower #revenues per passenger and therefore declining margins. More capacity means more competition, and prices are likely to fall again in the long term. Once again, what distinguishes every successful airline applies #costcontrol is the primary #margin driver.
