Efforts to decarbonize shipping reminds me of poker game. Players trying to read each other hand before placing own bet. According to report, industry is entering decisive decade and high table is being set. Myself, I particularly found interesting chapter on CCS, also due to potential value chain across other industries. We will touch upon the Report's findings during Annual Maritime Conference in Tallinn on October 4th and during BALTEXPO's panel discussion on October 11th, which I will have honor to moderate. Following the ship.energy 2023 SMF Fest in Valencia last November, SMF has launched its annual ‘Sustainable Marine Fuel Confidence Index’, sharing the important outcomes of the conference.   According to ship.energy, the index offers a ‘moment in time’ view of how confident shipping and marine fuel industry stakeholders are that the key components required for maritime’s energy transition, such as technology and infrastructure, are already in place.   The report found bio-LNG at the top of the confidence index as the leading alternate fuel choice for industry stakeholders. This is partly due to the existing LNG infrastructure, meaning bio-LNG can be used as a drop-in fuel in all current and future LNG-fuelled engines with no modification.   Bio-LNG can be transported, stored and bunkered in ports using the established infrastructure. The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service today unveiled the much anticipated updated details for sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF) tax credits. SAF achieved with 50% less greenhouse gas emissions will be eligible for a $1.25/gallon credit. SAF produced with a greater reduction than 50% will be eligible for an additional 1¢/gallon for each percentage point the reduction exceeds 50%, up to a maximum per gallon credit of $1.75. The shipping industry will find it challenging to secure a sufficient supply of carbon-neutral fuels, according to DNV’s latest Maritime Forecast to 2050 report. Launched earlier today, the findings emphasize the need to consider all alternative approaches to reducing emissions and action must be taken now to secure future success. Increasing regulatory pressures, stricter targets from international bodies and tough competition from other decarbonizing sectors will all impact the maritime industry’s access to sustainable fuels. Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO DNV Maritime, said: “The 2020s marks the decisive decade for shipping. 👩✈️This is also a huge consideration for the aviation industry given the success of SAF is predicated on an adequate supply of biofuels for blending. This ultimately requires more investment into essential technology to increase aviation biofuel availability. 🚢What a conundrum as the delivery of SAF is at large dependent on sea logistics and at the moment the world’s tonnage is still for the most part powered by conventional fuel and at the mercy, as the article explains, of the sector’s own alternative fuel shortages. 🤝Collaborative efforts across the aviation and shipping sectors are important therefore in the decarbonisation efforts of the logistics industry as a whole. 🚚And let’s not forget about cars, trucks, and railroads, which all contribute to transportation end-use sector emissions and need to be factored into the complexity of decarbonising the transportation ecosystem. A New Twist In The Renewable Fuels Ban Story As you have probably heard, a recent political maneuver in Europe has revitalized discussion of a ban on heavy-duty and some publicly owned renewable-fueled internal combustion vehicles. I myself am not a German, French, Spanish, or other European citizen. But I can say that in the 7 months since Volker Wissing’s announcement that he and the FDP would ensure Europe would not ban renewable energy in the form of liquid hydrocarbons, I have used more of my German language skills than in the previous 27 years. What we know is that full electrification would cost many trillions of dollars, and full efuels would cost many billions. We know that electric cars are more efficient at using local VRE, and are physically incapable of using remote VRE - which is “efuels or lose it” territory. We know that full electrification has a very large carbon footprint, and efuels have embedded direct air capture - which is the only substantial carbon negative technology. And we know that the BEVolution is not about the environment. #Shipping is changing. Of vessels being built, 30 per cent of deadweight on order is for dual-fuel engines that can run on LNG and oil, and 9 per cent is for #methanol and oil dual-fuel engines, according to BloombergNEF. The world’s largest container shipping company, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, is looking to procure dual-fuel #ammonia and oil vessels while A.P. Moller - Maersk has already launched methanol-fuelled vessels. This development is driven at least in part by the fact that large ships entering an EU port now fall under the EU’s #emissionstradingscheme and must pay to emit greenhouse gasses. Crucially, the drive to #decarbonise provides #infrastructure investors with opportunities. Infrastructure Investor spoke to Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners' Philip Christiani about going for #greenfuels, while InfraVia Capital Partners’s Athanasios (Thanasis) Zoulovits Zoulovits argues that #LNG makes more sense for the moment.
