Managing Director Hal Singer was invited by Harvard Law School to have an interactive lunch with students. Dr. Singer discussed the challenges facing enforcers in pursuing labor theories of harm, including proving a nexus between the challenged conduct and wage suppression, demonstrating market power, and rebutting efficiency defenses. Annual comp of $20 million? Summing up the state of the union on lateral moves in the outer reaches of the universe, from Law.com. Some "on the money" observations from Dan Binstock: “This is such a unique situation, rarified air, it’s hard to see many other firms competing on this level.... . Could there be a ripple effect? Maybe. Could it get in certain people’s heads? Yes. But I think attorneys at that level only look at certain firms. It is a small universe when you play at that level.... I don’t think firms in the $3 million range for profits per partner are too worried about this....They just see it as the rich getting richer.” Can we assume that these firms will not be among those who woo Harvard Law graduates at OCI cocktails with cheerful claims of a "collegial culture". How could culture, or anything else running in an interpersonal vein, matter at all in these circumstances? This air is getting as thin as tech's. #biglaw #howmuchisenough

I love being a lawyer. I get to spend my days advising on how to make things right in the workplace and treat people fairly and appropriately. I ferret out situations in which employees feel they have been wronged to understand what has occurred, whether the employee's perspective is accurate, and where things may be amiss. In my work, I am guided by a robust body of laws, legal principles, and organization policies. In the outside world, it feels of late like I am surrounded by chaos. It inundates my news feed and I need to consciously turn away from it to focus on other aspects of life. Today is Law Day, when as the American Bar Association has noted, we celebrate "the rule of law" and cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal system. Laws provide orderliness, a structure that guides our interactions at a societal level, and ideally they reflect our values and governing principles. As attorneys, we make a commitment to uphold the rule of law. My challenge to myself and to my fellow attorneys on this Law Day is that we find ways to bring to the table the best of what our profession offers to tame the chaos, preserve individual rights, protect our fellow citizens, and offer a more just society.
