Friendly Friday post. So for all of my other staffing professionals that are reminded by these three rings on a daily basis... I am with you. I have a bad habit of talking to fast and stumbling over my words trying to get all my thoughts out at once. Something that helps me slow down my train of thought, while also getting me well past my move goal, is my desk treadmill (average about 20,000 steps). Football season is just getting started, but in hiring it's almost the 4th Quarter! We've had several calls with new clients this week about new searches we will be handling soon, including a couple of companies hoping to hire a new General Counsel by year-end. At this time of year, employers hoping to attract talent away from another employer need to be prepared to pay not only the traditional compensation package (base salary and performance-based bonus), but also some additional compensation to make up for the bonus the employee must leave behind. Top talent has earned at least 75% of their target annual bonus in their current job by this time of year. You can't expect them to walk away from that completely. Hiring at this time can be a little bit of a dance. Job changes are difficult. They are stressful. Companies do not need to make them worse. Everyone understands that most companies do not take joy in firing employees. However... simply telling the person you are firing that you do not like having to do so is NOT enough. Be transparent. Treat them with dignity. Treat them with respect, like they are a real person with bills to pay, responsibilities, and emotions.
