We recognise the huge value that our amazing team bring and are always looking for ways to increase salaries and benefits. We have recently become accredited as a 'Real Living Wage' employer via the Living Wage Foundation. I think we are looking at the wrong end of this, of course business or Farms will not want the commitment, thats fine but they have to give a bit as well and open up the inflexibility of the program. That is to flex the visa so its not bonded directly to them. As most farms are dealing with Labour Hire firms to fill their vacancy requirements during their peak harvest time be it 3months or 6months as we have seen modeled, all that is needed is honesty and diligence. Dont bring more people then needed to be an added burden to communities. Its hard enough for locals to live on 30hrs per week let alone for these guys to be avereged out? Here are some solutions… 1. Remove Bonded Visa streams 2. Shorten the contracts to suit 3. If youre bringing people over for shorter contracts, pay all the expenses in full and apply no deductions to the participants. It strengthens their family connections and lives especially married with small kids. Etc 4. Government to allow more smaller farms into the space. As for the new changes, I believe its fair for everyone.
This shouldn't be unworkable. Transparency in employment terms and conditions is a key principle of #ethicalrecruitment. When entering into the PALM scheme, it’s not unreasonable for #migrantworkers to expect to earn a living wage each week. It is a good step forward. However, there’s still more to do to make the scheme fully align with ethical recruitment principles.

NFWM’s annual Harvest of Justice resources are now available for you to use and share with your communities. The 2023 theme is “Farm Workers & Racism: The Struggle for Justice, Respect, & Fair Pay.” From slavery to sharecropping to exclusions in labor laws, our food system is rooted in racism. Today, our nation’s farm workers continue to face challenges and risks connected to this legacy. Weekly topics include a history of racism in agriculture, environmental racism, modern day slavery, and more. We encourage you to follow the complete 6-week program or choose what works best for your community. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gzbrksea. Harvest of Justice is an annual educational program that provides resources including information sheets, videos, and social media content so that you can help your faith community learn about issues affecting farm workers. Harvest of Justice is an opportunity to raise consciousness, commitment, and contributions. The Harvest of Justice Season falls between Labor Day and World Food Day (Sept. 5 – Oct. 16, 2022). Labor Day in America focuses on our country’s labor movement and the many ways that US workers have given their toil to make our country prosper. Farm workers are among them. It is a fitting beginning to the Harvest of Justice season. And we end with World Food Day, an annual recognition of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations’ founding in 1945. Primarily observed by organizations concerned with food security, we recognize that many farm workers are themselves in need of food even though they work to feed our nation.

While designing our standards at the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) we want to hear from our stakeholders whether we are covering the right issues to protect the #humanrights of employees in aquaculture and if we do so in a way that is implementable in practice. One of the topics we often get questions on is #workinghours. The blog below explains what we are proposing for the new ASC Farm Standard and our questions about the new requirements.
At ASC we find that among the wide range of human and labour rights issues that are included in our standards, one often stands out as more complex to implement and understand: working hours. 💡 So, what can we do to set working hour standards in aquaculture that protect employees’ rights, but that also permit farms to operate in an effective and productive way? Learn more in our latest blog 👉 https://lnkd.in/eU57d_E4 #aquaculture #seafood #seafoodindustry #fishfarming #humanrights #labourrights

A report by the Living Wage Foundation has found that one in five UK workers were in insecure jobs in 2022, while one in ten were in insecure jobs that also paid below the Real Living Wage. It also found that the sectors with the highest incidence of insecure workers were those in “agriculture, forestry and fishing”; “accommodation and food services” and “arts, entertainment and recreation”.
