If ya love good stories from the field, our Environmental Scientist, Monte Garroutte, is always chock full of ‘em! This past summer, Monte did field work in several interesting locations across Alaska. (But who are we kidding – most of our project sites in Alaska are, by their nature of being Alaska, interesting!) * Said Monte: When I was in Savoonga this past spring, I got to eat mangtak —the St. Lawrence Island Yupik word for whale blubber with skin. The local Native Alaskans had just harvested a 55-foot-long bowhead whale. The whale arrived in town on snowmobiles with trailers piled high with mangtak that was dropped off in the snowbanks outside people’s homes. I was invited to try some. And it was 100% raw and 100% delicious. To me it was like eating the finest sushi tuna. It melted in your mouth like butter. I have had it before but not like this. Each year, the Native Alaskans on the western and northern coasts of Alaska are given an allotment of whales they can harpoon and use for subsistence. An international whaling commission sets harvest limits and uses data from the whales harvested to better understand whale migration patterns and track whale population health. There is even an agreement between the U.S. and Russia regarding the allocation of this whale harvest between Alaska Natives and Chukotka Natives in Russia. I was in the area for a public meeting related to our project work. * What an experience! And just another reason why we love what we do. Join our team and perhaps you too shall be as lucky as to try mangtak! Current openings include Professional Land Surveyor, Environmental Engineer I, Environmental Scientist Field Lead (link in the comments to apply). Still ini 2022 my second work in Blitar City. The work is about feasibility study for a field location in Tlumpu Village. The study using GIS Landuse Analysis using 4 criteria : physique, ecology, economy and regulation. Based on the assessment results, a location feasibility score is obtained Tlumpu Village field development plan at 87.50%.Plans and development related to surrounding circulation are needed location of field plans such as widening roads for field access, parking locations for field visitors, and several other supporting facilities for field visitors. #urbanplanning #gismapping #gisanalyst #gisjobs #urbandevelopment

Meet Unity Distance Education master's student Erika! . Erika recently took the Conservation Ecology course with Professor Andrei Snyman. . "My name is Erika, and I am located in Bradshaw, Nebraska. Before starting at Unity, I was working for an environmental consulting company as a Biological Technician. Though I loved this job, I wanted to move further up in the wildlife field. The courses offered through Unity are focused on topics I knew I needed to have to reach my career goals. I also loved that these courses were online and worked with my schedule a little better. For these reasons, I chose Unity. . I am a graduate student working on my Master's in Wildlife Conservation and Management. I chose this area of study because I want to further my skills and knowledge to reach my goals in wildlife conservation. I love nature and wildlife and want to pursue a career in conserving the earth's biodiversity. I am hoping my education gives me the best possible foundation to succeed in my future career. . The Conservation Ecology course was beneficial in gaining skills and experiences that will be important for my future career. The biggest takeaway from the course was getting experiences relating to species status and habitat assessments and developing management recommendations for a threatened species. I know that the conservation ecology concepts covered in the assignments and discussions will be beneficial for someone pursuing a career as a wildlife biologist or similar. This was the first online course that I have taken at Unity Environmental University that incorporated doing field work rather than just online work, which is something I really enjoyed. The discussion threads were helpful in learning the material and a wonderful way to interact with peers and the professor. The instructor was quick to answer any questions I had and was active throughout the course, which also made the course enjoyable. After graduating from Unity, my future career goal is to be a Wildlife Biologist focusing on conserving endangered and threatened species." . Alongside conducting assessments of potential sites prior to commencing works, an ecologist plays a vital role in supervising site investigations. The presence of an ecologist is often necessary to survey areas that will be disturbed for resting species, including amphibians and small mammals, and to relocate them to a suitable receptor site. #SiteAssessment #wildlifeconservation #environmentalprotection #siteinvestigation #UKEcology #HabitatManagement #biodiversityprotection #wildlifemanagement
