Attempting to filter enough carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere to make a significant impact on climate change would require hundreds of billions of dollars in government spending, according to a new report. The suite of technologies emerging to attempt that task all fall under an umbrella called carbon dioxide removal, or CDR. It’s still risky and astronomically expensive. But there’s been growing chatter about it, particularly as the US continues producing record amounts of oil and gas. According to the new report by research firm Rhodium Group, the US needs to spend roughly $100 billion a year on CDR in order to scale up to a level that would help the country meet its climate goals. A majority of that needs to come in the form of supportive policies like tax credits and procurement programs. There’s been growing chatter about it, particularly as the US continues producing record amounts of oil and gas For comparison, the Inflation Reduction Act passed in 2021 includes $369 billion for clean energy incentives — the nation’s largest climate investment to date. So $100 billion of government spending annually, as the report recommends, is a lot to spend on novel technologies that have yet to prove themselves at scale and potentially still not enough to make this strategy effective. It’s a big gamble, with the livability of our planet as we know it on the line. Solving climate change is a numbers game, and the goal — as defined by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — is to reach net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by roughly 2050. That’s what’s needed to stop global average temperatures from rising 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than they were before the Industrial Revolution. Crossing that threshold means that climate-related disasters like extreme heat, sea level rise, and biodiversity loss become significantly worse, perhaps surpassing humans’ ability to adapt to these changes in the most vulnerable parts of the world. That 1.5-degree target was set in the Paris agreement nearly a decade ago in 2015 — but greenhouse gas emissions are still climbing. The US is already dumping a good chunk of cash into capturing CO2, even though the only way to stop climate change and meet goals set under the Paris agreement is to stop depending on fossil fuels. The 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law includes $3.5 billion to build new carbon removal hubs across the US. Big companies including Microsoft and Amazon are also paying startups to capture some of their pollution. And the fossil fuel industry has embraced the technology, even using it to market supposedly more sustainable oil. Apparently, that still isn’t enough. The US will need the capacity to draw down a gigaton of CO2 by 2050 to meet net-zero goals, the report says. It’s an enormous amount of carbon dioxide to capture, equivalent to roughly 20 percent of the nation’s carbon footprint. The country’s capacity to take carbon

Cutting down on carbon emission is one good gesture to make the earth home to us all. According to the recently held COP28, over 100 governments have pledged to triple their campaign for clean energy by 2030 and this will mean alot of commitment from regulators stakeholders and individual end users of energy. Of course it is a long way to go but not impossible if collaborators within the sector across the world will come together to enact a policy that rewards and incentivise those who respond and embraced such campaign as this, at all levels. Not just the end users, but the stakeholders, policy makers and everyone partaking in the campaign in whatever little way. The world gets cleaner when we think renewable, it gets safer when we cut down on carbon emissions. Image Credit : Pixabay #cop28 #climateaction #climatechange

We are knowingly marching down a path of immense suffering and economic calamity because the fossil fuel industry has propagated three myths designed to scare governments from doing the right thing—and so far, it has worked: Myth #1: Fossil fuels are essential to meet national energy security needs Yet, the reality is that oil and gas are globally traded and will always be subject to volatile prices. Renewable electricity, building efficiency, and clean transportation can do far more for countries’ energy security than fossil fuels. Myth #2: Without more oil and gas, we can never meet the world’s growing energy demand. Governments spent a record $1.3 trillion subsidizing fossil fuels last year, on top of another $1 trillion in private investment. If this $2.3 trillion was invested in supporting renewable energy it could meet the growing electricity demand, even with population growth and higher incomes. Myth #3: Carbon-capture technology will make fossil fuels emission-free. Fossil fuels annually produce 37 gigatons of carbon emissions today. The International Energy Agency (IEA) says we must cut that by 15 gigatons by 2030 to meet the 1.5°C goal—and also says carbon capture technology will only capture 1 gigaton annually by 2030. Our leaders must call their bluff and strike a deal to rapidly and equitably shift away from fossil fuels this decade. They should start with three critical actions: 1. Richer oil-and-gas producing countries should start at home with the most obvious solution: stop approving new oil and gas projects. 2. All countries must develop stronger policies and regulations to reduce fossil fuel use and encourage clean energy, with 2030 targets. They cannot rely on voluntary action from oil-and-gas companies. 3. Rich countries must financially support developing countries in this transition, as they committed to in the Paris Agreement. There is no more time for false narratives. Our governments must deliver a transformational outcome at this summit that shows countries can still come together for the common good. Business Value Curator / eco-friendly AI Expert / Author / Speaker / Founder I tick the boxes, so that you can think outside
#COP28 review. from a distance - no way. it's just not enough!!! the final document emphasizes the urgent need for deep, rapid and sustainable #measures to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 °C. The few measures proposed include tripling global renewable energy capacity and doubling average annual energy efficiency gains by 2030. Other #priorities include accelerating the phase-out of coal-fired power generation, introducing net-zero emissions energy systems and using zero-carbon fuels until the middle of the century. It also calls for a just transition from fossil fuels, accelerating zero-emission technologies and reducing non-carbon emissions such as methane by 2030. Other measures include expanding zero-emission vehicles on the road, ending inefficient fossil fuel subsidies and promoting a just transition. it's a #small step in the right direction. a really small one. the bottom line is that I'm #disappointed and I hope many people share this #emotion. The #statement alone almost makes me angry: "The president of the climate conference, #Sultan al-Jaber, praised the decision as historic. "We have delivered," he shouted to the delegations, who stood applauding after the decision. "For the first time ever, we have a consensus on the future of fossil fuels energies," al-Jaber said." I'm really #confused about what's happening here! is it about the #climate #crisis and or is it primarily about #economic interest?

Pushing towards a future driven by renewable, green energy is a win-win....tackles climate change, improves standard of living, drives technological innovation, AND creates jobs. The right says this is some 'woke agenda', because they are paid off by rent-seeking legacy oil industry and petrostates. The left says we must sacrifice human wellbeing for the good of the planet, but they do it from the priveleged perch of a Western lifestyle. Both are false. We can and must do more. #climatechange #renewablenergy #greenjobs

Race Towards Net Zero The race towards achieving net zero emissions is a global effort to mitigate climate change by balancing the amount of greenhouse gases emitted with an equivalent amount removed from the atmosphere. Nations, businesses, and individuals are setting ambitious targets to reach net zero by a certain date, typically by reducing emissions and investing in sustainable practices, renewable energy, and carbon capture technologies. Is it possible to succeed in this race and achieve net zero emissions on a global scale? While the task is undoubtedly challenging, advancements in technology, policy momentum, and a growing awareness of the importance of sustainability make achieving net zero emissions a plausible goal. This race is driven by the urgent need to combat climate change and preserve a habitable planet for future generations. Collaboration, innovation, and policy implementation are key aspects of this vital journey towards a sustainable future. #NetZero #ClimateAction #Sustainability #sdg #pohtedang #greeneconomy #netzero #itspossible #ItsPossibleTogether 🌍
