THE PITTI IMMAGINE UOMO AWARD 2024 GOES TO ECOALF
Ecoalf was awarded this prestigious prize during the opening ceremony of Pitti Uomo 106. Congratulations to the founder and president, Javier Goyeneche, and the entire team for their (truly) sustainable industrial project.
In Goyeneche's vision, fashion is not merely a business but a commitment to responsibility. For this reason, together with Javier, we wish to extend once again the invitation that has always defined Ecoalf: Act Now, Because There is no Planet B!
Have you ever wondered about the sustainable side of leather? Chiara Mastrotto from Gruppo Mastrotto shares valuable insights! As a consumer, it is important to know the path your products take.
Leather, a by-product of the food industry, embraces the principles of the circular economy. At Gruppo Mastrotto, they go a step further with eco-friendly practices, minimising waste and impact. Brands should highlight these efforts and emphasise the sustainability, longevity and waste reduction of leather.
Did you know that tanneries worldwide save more than 8 million tonnes of hides every year, preventing 5 million tonnes of greenhouse gases? Let's make informed choices together!

This is the most accurate statement I've seen so far with regards Renewcells announcement this week...
..."a collective failure driven by the lack of urgency and misalignment in a complex system across brands, supply chain partners and investors"...
The business models a lot of our industry is built on aren't going to be easy to change. It goes without saying, it needs to change because of global warming amongst other detrimental #planetaryhealth issues. But how do businesses make such drastic changes to their traditional, commercially safe, operations? It's all they've ever known. Change is scary, risky, and usually comes with a downturn in #profit margins for an unknown length of time.
Doing the right, #sustainable, #ethical <insert whatever responsible measure adjective appropriate> is going to hurt many businesses for want of a better word, but that hurt is a means to an end.
Having medical treatment for conditions and diseases that can cause us fatalities is unpleasant, inconvenient, costly. But we accept those negatives in order to survive. We need society and businesses to accept this (the condition), so that the Renewcells of the world (the treatment) can continue to operate (heal the diseases).
Everyone is looking at each other for answers, funding, blame, a way out etc wondering who should be the one to pay for a solution. Last time I checked we all lived on this planet where the air quality is going to be so poor one day our grandkids walk around with respirators as common practice.
Customers desires to #consumeless and pay more needs to be their contribution.
Businesses desires for #growth and higher profits needs to pause or reverse as their contribution.
Governments slowly introducing #legislation to save ourselves from ourselves, whilst supporting the economy in that transition via #investment needs to be their contribution.
It's layers and layers and layers of small changes now that will put us in the right direction. Yes, it should have been done years ago when the science warned us but alas we didn't. Renewcells only problem was being ahead of its time and the curve. The solutions are there but the world as we know it aren't prepared to pay for it.
Like the introduction of H&S legislation back in the 70's, now's the time for the hammer to fall. Because left to their own devices the majority of the worlds #businesses#brands and #consumers will run the risk of delayed harm for instant gratification. We are but human, it's in our nature. #policy wrapped up with clever #marketing could assist this shift.
I'm going to keep #bangingthisdrum. Maybe one day I'll be making a noise in the right place, to the right people, in the right way, and we'll all come out of this "ok", businesses, consumers, planet alike. Here's hoping 🤞 ♻

It is with heavy hearts that we process the news that Renewcell, one of the first commercial-scale chemical recyclers in the industry capable of enabling brands to meet 2030 sustainability targets, has filed for bankruptcy.
This is not only a failure for Renewcell, but a collective failure driven by the lack of urgency and misalignment in a complex system across brands, supply chain partners and investors.
Having worked closely with the Renewcell team, we know first-hand how dedicated they are to solving one of our most urgent challenges: transitioning the fashion industry into a fully circular system that minimises harm to our planet. Renewcell provides us all with invaluable learnings and paves the road for others.
Working in unchartered territory is never easy. While this chapter may be challenging, it is also an opportunity for actors to step up in order to bring Renewcell’s operations back online.
This serves as a critical wake-up call. The work continues, and so does our commitment to a circular and sustainable fashion industry.

There should be holistic approach regarding sustainability in textile industry.
Use of recycled textiles in final products, need to be combined with sustainable processing for dyeing and finishing to achieve genuine ‘cradle to grave’ reduction in environmental impacts and have true value addition that may possibly absorb cost implications of replacing the virgin materials with recycled materials.
Just replacing full or part of virgin raw materials in final product amounts to presenting half of the impact reduction story to final consumer.
Also sustainability LCA need to be carried out for final product considering ‘cradle to grave’ impacts due to raw materials, all chemicals used along with water and energy used, in ALL processes till product reaches consumer, to make the final consumer be able to differentiate between green washed products and genuinely sustainable offerings to get consumer support for sustainable products which may be missing on required scale.
Total and foolproof transparency to final consumer may be the answer .

🙌 we love to share positive stories on fashion waste, recycling and sustainability...
Germany is tackling the fashion waste problem head-on, thanks to the innovative work of Recyclehero. With the average German discarding about 5.5 kilograms of clothes per year, there's a substantial need for a reliable recycling system. Recyclehero, a Hamburg-based start-up, provides a free collection service for used clothing across Germany. They ensure these items find new life in local second-hand shops or charity organisations, instead of becoming a burden on the environment or being shipped off to the Global South.
The service has gained significant traction, benefiting both individuals and businesses. Customers can easily turn their old clothes into team-building activities at their office or rely on the convenience of Recyclehero's collection system. This initiative not only facilitates the circular economy but also promotes sustainable practices within the fashion industry. 🌱
It's vital to keep this change going! Together, we can make a tangible difference. I'd love to hear your thoughts on sustainable fashion practices. Comment below! 👇
