The World Meteorological Organization's State of Global Water Resources 2023 report includes a contribution from #ECMWF. Our team provided data from #CopernicusEMS GloFAS, joining nine other global hydrological modelling systems, which were used to create a complete status of river discharge globally. ECMWF scientist Shaun Harrigan says: "We brought global hydrological models together with observations to get a complete picture of the world’s rivers: 2023 was the driest year for global rivers in over three decades.” #EarlyWarningsForAll #StateOfWater #stateofclimate Read more ⬇️

🌍🌐 New podcast episode on Destination Earth’s (#DestinE) digital twins available. 🎙 irina sandu, our Director of Destination Earth at ECMWF, talked about the European Union’s (EU Digital & Tech) ambitious initiative to build digital twins of the Earth on the WeatherPod. This podcast episode, hosted by the experienced scientists Dr. Alan Thorpe and Dr. David Rogers, delves into the initiative and ECMWF’s involvement in it. Irina focused on the role of ECMWF in delivering and implementing the first two, high priority digital twins on Weather-induced Extremes and Climate Change Adaptation as well as the Digital Twin Engine, the software infrastructure behind the digital twins, together with nearly 100 partners throughout Europe. The discussion also revolved around the hot topics of AI and machine learning. She highlights: “We feed continuously the latest science and technology advances into the digital twins so that they remain at the cutting-edge. AI brings fascinating opportunities to complement what we are already doing with the physical models.” Other topics included the synergies with existing national meteorological and climate services and other European initiatives, the added value of digital twins’ vis-a-vis the current weather forecasting and climate projection systems and much more.
