Every child and community in Queensland deserves to feel safe and protected.   PeakCare takes community safety seriously, and strongly believes we can ‘Do Detention Differently’ in Queensland.   PeakCare’s state election platform emphasises that we must all reimagine the system. We strongly believe the most effective way to enhance community safety is through the prevention of crime by investing in early intervention pathways to prosperity such as education, health and housing supports, that address the root causes of crime before it occurs.   Where crimes have occurred, we know there are evidence-based models that enhance community safety in the longterm by reducing recidivism and remand rates. PeakCare’s Executive Director, Research & Advocacy and Churchill Fellow, has seen firsthand international implementation of gold standard, evidence-based initiatives such as the Diagrama model, which is backed by extensive evaluations including comparative applications in the Australian context. The evidence shows that the Diagrama model achieves lower rates of recidivism in a safe, stable and cost-effective setting.   PeakCare acknowledges the insights of the Justice Reform Initiative and the Honourable Margaret White AO that “a genuine opportunity exists in Queensland, and Australia more broadly, to invest in the scalable, community-led solutions we know work. The research is there. The programs exist. We had the opportunity to highlight the public health department’s Community Health Improvement Partnership (CHIP) in our new public health primer which focuses on uplifting cross-sector partnerships that are working across sectors to advance health and racial equity. The coalition of partners prioritized the unique challenges that BIPOC communities often face and worked with communities to identify community-driven solutions that increased community engagement and involvement when planning and implementing programs to advance health and racial equity efforts. Wes Streeting sheds light on the challenges hindering the development of a comprehensive plan for Social Care, indicating a potential timeline of up to 10 years to establish a National Care Service. Despite efforts to accelerate discharges and enhance collaboration between Health and Social Care, previous initiatives have not met the mark. The prevailing issues of underfunding, inadequate support, and ineffective regulation within Health, Social Care, and Local Authorities present significant barriers to addressing the needs of an increasingly complex elderly population. The disjointed public sector commissioning of health and social care further complicates the landscape, leading to a system that is failing the people it aims to serve and knowingly so. It is hard to see in public office, who actually cares.

Community mental health is a significant part of the mental health system. Unfortunately, years of underfunding have resulted in significant wage gaps. These organizations receive funding from the government, similar to hospitals and other areas of healthcare, to provide care, and they too are limited by government restrictions on spending funds, on wage increases, one-time funding, etc. The significant wage gap that exists between community mental health and roles in schools, hospitals, justice, and even private sector (including virtual care), has seen a departure from community mental health for higher paying roles, and a challenge to recruit and retain staff. All this at a time when the demand for mental health is greater than ever. All this at a time that integrated care where community care, acute care, and social support organizations work in partnership to create a healthcare system that works for the populations it serves is a focus of the Government. It is time for a plan that closes the gap, that recognizes the value of community health, and ensures that people are able to get the care they need close to home, in their communities, when they need it. #CloseTheGap #CommunityMentalHealth #Wages

In 2020, ANCOR, a public policy and advocacy organization, issued its first-ever State of America’s Direct Support Workforce Crisis survey, a set of measures provided to organizations to understand how they navigate long-term shortages of qualified direct support professionals. For the past four years, ANCOR has continued efforts to understand challenges faced by the direct support workforce. Right now, there's still a critical shortage of qualified professionals. “Investments made in the workforce have helped but it's still not enough," said Lydia Dawson, ANCOR's Director of Policy, Regulatory and Legal Analysis. The impact of the pandemic has only made things worse on Home and Community Based Services (HCBS), with temporary funding coming to an end and diminished access to case management services. According to the report, 95 percent of providers reported "moderate" or "severe" staffing shortages in the past year alone. It's clear that more funding and support are needed to address this crisis and to ensure that individuals with disabilities receive the care and support they deserve.
