I know I know; I’m sharing another #Ilovemyjob post - but it is true. Part of working in #employeeengagement is making sure that there is a high level of enthusiasm and dedication that our colleagues feel towards their work, each other and abcam. We want them to love what they do, where they work, who they work with and what we work for. A few months ago, I had a few folks ask me if we could look into starting a coed basketball team. The league we found was way over our allocated budget, but we still forged on. The team came up with a great idea for fundraising - a “plated lunch”, which we hosted last week. Team members each brought in dishes including Haitian patties, lasagna, fresh dumplings, egg fried rice, potato salad, meatballs, pulled chicken, pasta salad, apple crisp and cookies- and more! The whole Waltham site came together to purchase plates and I quickly realized people weren’t asking for change back and were giving more than the suggested amount. I had venmo’s coming in from remote workers “For the 🏀 team!” “Go abcam basketball”. At the end of the day, we raised the more than the funds we needed to, and we’re currently in 3rd place in the league! Our upcoming Grand Reopening celebration event presented the team with a bit of a challenge - how do we make it possible for as many people to ride with us on the day when our normal services are sold out four-six weeks in advance? These services also take 1.5hr each and we can only run three a day while keeping our crews within their fatigue management hours - so extra services wasn’t the answer. Our senior operational volunteers put their heads together, and with the help of some old school train graphs and a passion for the railway they came up with a plan. This is how our “taster” rides were born - six, shorter, 45 min trips to Top Points and back that give our customers a taste of the real thing. Using two locomotives – our familiar green steam engine on one end and a beautifully restored diesel engine on the other - we can make it easy for the crews to run the services on time. Plus what a spectacular site for our celebration day! Tickets for the trips are at a discounted rate and will come with a bonus 10% discount for a full ride on the train within 12 months of the event - because we’re sure once everyone has a taste they will want to come back for the whole trip. See volunteering for us isn’t just for those keen to drive a train, direct traffic as a guard or be the friendly face in our stations (although we welcome anyone keen to do those jobs too!). If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be behind the scenes - why not come volunteer with us? We provide all the training needed for operational roles plus there’s lots of opportunities for roles that don’t need any training or where you can put your professional skills to good use.
