Seven years ago, HBCU 20x20 | The Application was born out of a deep desire to tackle the systemic barriers that so many talented Black millennials faced in the workforce. As I reflect on its roots, I think back to a time when I was stuck in the cycle of “click and hope”—submitting resumes online and waiting for a response, often to no avail. As a proud Dillard University graduate, I saw firsthand how many of us—despite doing everything "right"—struggled to land opportunities. That led to the launch of #HBCU20x20 on Labor Day 2017, with a mission to change that narrative. Our goal was bold: directly place 20,000 HBCU students and graduates into jobs and internships by 2020. We built partnerships with employers like PwC, The White House White House Initiative for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (still partners ‘til this day) hosted professional development workshops, and traveled from campus to campus, ensuring that our people were seen, heard, and most importantly, hired. As we celebrate seven years of #HBCU20x20, I am proud of how far we've come, but I know there's still work to be done. Exciting news! The legendary Penn Relays are back in 2024 and I couldn't be more thrilled! Get ready to witness some of the fastest runners in the world compete on the historic Franklin Field track. Kicking off the week with one of my favorite experiences, 2017 when Nike Sponsored the Lady Eagles of Brooklyn's Paul Robeson Campus with a new uniform. Today is a huge source of pride for me and my colleagues at BlueSKY Collaborative Partners. We are elated to see INROADS and Advancement of Blacks In Sports (ABIS) joining forces to tackle a critical issue: career readiness for Black student-athletes. As college sports navigate commercialization, INROADS and ABIS are stepping up to ensure these talented young individuals aren't left behind after the final whistle blows. Here's why I'm excited: Closing the opportunity gap: This partnership will connect Black student-athletes with pre-college programs, internships, and entrepreneurial initiatives, opening doors beyond the playing field. Beyond sports: Equipping athletes with leadership skills and exposing them to diverse career paths will expand their horizons and empower them to thrive in any field. The action starts now: The partnership kicks off at the NBA All-Star Weekend with a panel discussion produced by BlueSKY Collaborative Partners, The Transition Game, highlighting economic mobility for athletes. This opportunity could be pathbreaking for Black student-athletes, and I applaud INROADS and ABIS for their commitment to their success. Hendrix College is a private liberal arts college located in Conway, Arkansas, about 30 minutes from Little Rock. With approximately 60 percent of the 1,100 students coming from Arkansas and most of the remaining students coming from other Southern states, Hendrix College is often compared with other Southern liberal arts colleges like Millsaps and Rhodes. Among these, Hendrix is particularly noted for its progressive stance, with a significant focus on fostering global consciousness. Hendrix is recognized for its engaging teaching methods and curriculum emphasizing hands-on learning. The college's unique Odyssey program is particularly noteworthy. It requires students to complete three experiences—coursework, internships, or independent projects—from six categories: Artistic Creativity, Global Awareness, Professional and Leadership Development, Service to the World, Undergraduate Research, and Special Projects. The program ensures that students graduate with a portfolio of real-world experiences and skills. Hendrix is known for its rigorous science and social science programs. Popular majors include psychology, health science, economics and business, biochemistry and molecular biology, and English. Nearly two-thirds of students engage in research, especially in the natural sciences. About one-third of the students study abroad at Hendrix-sponsored programs in Austria, England, Costa Rica, Spain, France, Germany, and Cyprus or through over 150 partner programs. Hendrix strives to create an inclusive environment that respects and celebrates diversity. Black students comprise eight percent of the student body, Hispanics/Latinos nine percent, Asian Americans four percent, and multiracial students five percent. The college offers a range of programs and resources to support underrepresented students. Students are required to live on campus for all four years. Hendrix offers merit and need-based aid. The Olympics were actually 3 years ago and not 4 years ago because of covid19 disruptions. Rai Benjamin class of 2015 Mt. Vernon High School is one of the state of New York's Greatest of All Time Athletes. He set the New York State 400mh record in 2015 and it still stands today. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics he captured Silver in the 400mh and his recent performances show that he is aiming for Gold at these 2024 Olympics. I had the pleasure of watching Rai compete against some of our high school athletes over the years. There are now P-TECH high school graduates across all 10 economic regions of the state of New York. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Teams of students from 30 colleges and universities are coming this weekend to the Indiana University Kelley School of Business to compete at the 2024 National Diversity Case Competition. The competition, which is held the weekend before Martin Luther King Jr. Day, will bring together 118 students who represent some of the best and most diverse talent in undergraduate education from across the nation. Among the participating teams are four from historically Black institutions #HCBU Claflin University, Delaware State University, Howard University and Xavier University of Louisiana. Students are challenged to solve diversity-related business issues and share ideas while benefiting from workshops and networking with companies that value inclusion. This year, the competition will focus on a case provided by #AbbVie that focuses on improving the level of #diversity participation in clinical trials. The company is looking for solutions to de-stigmatize clinical trials and help increase participation, particularly among #underrepresented groups. Many students find that participating in this event leads to #leadership opportunities, internships and jobs after graduation. They will compete for $22,000 in prize money. https://lnkd.in/gXu6kp2Q
