How can we know our inner Self if we are distracted by the myriad concerns of the world around us? What does yoga recommend when the chaos of life just keeps coming at us? Why are we susceptible to more chaos piling on when we are trying to dig ourselves out? And, how can we manage such distraction when yoga teaches us that our deeper longing ought to be to truly know our Inner Self? We need to end the stigma on depression. Like asthma it can be genetic or caused by environmental factors and like asthma if left untreated it can be fatal. I tried a permanent solution 10 years ago. Thanks to God (and skilled doctors) I was unsuccessful. I was in a wheelchair for 3 months and spent 6 months in physical therapy. As far as anyone knew I just had a very unfortunate car accident…in an empty park. (I wasn’t going to hurt anyone else) Very few know (<10 including friends and family) and I wouldn’t be sharing it now but I keep seeing notifications and I’ve decided to ignore the screaming voice in my head yelling “shut up! nobody cares! This is embarrassing, you will regret it!”and be honest: life was overwhelming, I was crushed losing dad, I was getting divorced, and I’d lost all hope things would ever be ok again. Fast forward 10 years - I still talk to someone weekly, practice Mindfullness and TM for stress, and I’ve continued to learn and grow in the field I love. Started a company “Sanctuary” channel for colleagues to share experiences and encourage each other to keep going. Do I still struggle? Oh yeah. But if I start to get down on myself I remember my cousin needs an inhaler to breathe and is still a beast on the soccer field. If any of this resonates please talk to someone - it’s your life and doctors continue to find new treatments. Search “Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation” and “gut biome impact on mental health” to see some of the latest discoveries. It can get better. You aren’t alone. None of us are really. Reach out. Please.
With great sadness, we announce the passing of Chris Berry, who took his life on June 18 after a long struggle with obsessive negative thoughts and depression. Chris worked in the data security and analytics industry for 30 years. He was dedicated to yoga, and taught three weekly classes at CorePower Yoga locations in San Francisco. He was a beloved son, brother, father and husband to us. Our entire family is heartbroken. A commemorative yoga class will be held in Chris' honor at CorePower Yoga Hayes Valley on Sat. July 20, 2024 at 10:30 am, taught by Chris' colleague Tolga. The registration link for attending the class is below. Those who have not practiced at CorePower before will be asked to make a profile to reserve a spot, but attendees will not be charged. https://lnkd.in/gDjcWbQG

Over the weekend I attended the Front Range Yoga festival in Choteau, MT. It was fabulous! I regained much needed peace of mind and body. When I attended last year, I was surprised that the snacks offered in the welcome studio were unhealthy store bought muffins and stuff. This year, I offered to bring healthy trail mix packets and asked if I could let the yoga community know about my business with New York Life. The organizers agreed! I shared tidbits for studio owners and yoga teachers with my contact information. I received so many compliments! People were especially grateful to have free healthy snacks after the 2 long afternoon sessions on Saturday. What I learned for myself during the festival: building wealth is a spirtual practice. When we approach wealth-building: * as a service * as a mechanism to bring goodness into the world * as an exchange of energy * as something to give away freely with no expectation of return ... then it doesn't have to be the evil bogeyman it has become. Wealth-building can keep yoga studios going to offer mental/physical/spiritual well-being in communities. Wealth-building can fill in the social services gaps left behind by government. Wealth-building can provide all sorts of philanthropic good into our communities and nations. If you had all the wealth you wanted today, what good would you use it for? As a practicing yogini for over 20 years, I can help you with wealth-building that aligns with your values. It's my honor to serve you in this way. #wealth #wealthbuilding #philanthropy #spiritualpractice #buildingwealth #buildingwealthisaspiritualpractice #yoga #womenbusinessowners #womensupportingwomen #womenentrepreneurs #service #beofservice #wealthisaservice #values #alignment #earnwithlove #sharewealth #bethegood #dogood #community

We always need rest and there are times we need more rest like with and following an illness or injury and at different times of year. When we align with the seasons winter is a time for really slowing down and bringing in more rest. Following my donation based Embodied Rest workshop last Saturday I said that I could run another one of these workshops as a few people had asked me about this. I am running another on the 26th Jan which I’m mainly running for CRPS UK and the few additional places have been filled. I’m really looking forward to exploring and nurturing rest with people again. I could consider running a third one of these workshops some time within the next 2-3 weeks if there is the interest for this. Otherwise I will probably run this workshop again towards the end of the year. I am also considering running a couple of yoga nidra sessions before the spring which would be gentle movement and then a yoga nidra practice. Let me know if this is of interest and I will add you to the list. You don’t need to have done the Embodied Rest workshop to attend this. This event wouldn’t be a workshop as such, more of a yoga nidra class. Please get in touch if you would like to attend a future Embodied Rest workshop and/or a yoga nidra event. #rest #restandrecharge #restorative #yoga #yoganidra #awareness #somatics #embodiment #traumainformed #wellness #wellbeing #nervoussystemregulation

And breathe . . . Breathing guide for busy people (All Carers are busy people): Find a quiet spot and rest your hands Breathe along with the image for a few minutes Count 4 breaths in, hold, slowly breathe out. You don’t need complicated instructions, you need space to breathe, regularly. Yoga and breathwork can help you meet your own needs, and give some much needed space between you and your loved one when it gets ‘challenging’ After Umbrage is a charity for those that care, we know how hard you work. #breathworkforcarers #mindfulbreathing #breathingexercises #calmingtechniques #stressmanagement #relaxationtechniques #anxietyrelief #mindfulnesspractice

Living yoga on and off the mat is our goal. Here are 4 ways to take your yoga off your mat and into your life: 🫁 Breathe: Your breath is the simplest way to staying present throughout the day. You can also use deep, mindful breaths to manage stress and stay grounded. 🧠 Observing your thoughts: Pay attention to your thoughts without judging them and remember you are not your thoughts.Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, especially during challenging times when your thoughts might turn more negative. 🙏 Cultivate gratitude: Take moments throughout the day to reflect on what you’re grateful for. This practice can help shift your mindset and bring more positivity. 🙃 Letting go of control and accepting: Recognize when you’re holding on too tightly to outcomes or situations. Practice allowing things to unfold naturally and letting go of the need to control everything. #yogaoffthemat #yogainreallife #yogaintolife #yogisinreallife #yogaonandoffthemat #YogaForAll #givebackyoga #yogatherapy #yogaforchange #yogateacher #yogateachers #communityyoga #yoganonprofit #nonprofitorganization #yogafundraiser #fundraisingcampaign #wellnessforall

Friday #yoga #pose from You Call This Yoga - A Non-Profit Organization: Consider having a chair with the recommended height of your hips being positioned higher than your knees when seated. Have that behind you and start in Standing Mountain Pose. With your exhale, lower your bum to just hovering over the seat. Consider a few breaths in this position. You may settle onto the chair and choose to repeat from a standing position or initiate from seated. If starting from seated to just hovering over the chair, attempt to keep your head upright, shoulder blades down in back, elbows by your side, glutes and thighs engaged to stabilize your position. What pose is this to increase #core #strength and #balance? Will Barfield
