ABLE Basics: For too long, people with disabilities could not save for the future out of fear of losing their benefits. Millions of Americans with disabilities depend on various public benefits for income, health care, food, and housing. Many of these benefits require meeting a means or resource test that limits the eligibility of individuals who report more than $2,000 in assets. The ABLE Act Offers More Possibilities The federal Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act authorized states to establish tax-advantaged savings programs so individuals with disabilities can save and invest money without jeopardizing eligibility for public benefits. Contribute up to $17,000 each year. Save additional earned income thanks to the ABLE to Work Act. Leverage tax advantages to help make the most of your money. Save while maintaining eligibility for public benefits such as Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Pay for various expenses related to maintaining health, independence, and quality of life. More independence, greater financial security, and a better quality of life – that’s the future ABLE is building. ABLE is the perfect choice for self-savers or those saving for a loved one’s future.

I recently read an article in HuffPost about the federal government bolstering protections for individuals with disabilities with a specific focus on their access to federal programs. While the article primarily discusses access to medical care and equipment, all programs that receive federal funds must ensure that they are accessible to individuals with disabilities. If you receive federal funds, have you done your due diligence in ensuring equal access to your program?? https://lnkd.in/eaYSxRxC

At Able Inc., we support people with disabilities. Part of our mission is to help our consumers access programs and resources to live their best lives. CalABLE is one of those programs. CalABLE accounts help people living with disabilities to invest in their futures while preserving their benefits. Before CalABLE accounts existed, people with disabilities receiving government benefits couldn’t save more than $2,000 or they were at risk of losing their benefits. Today, anyone with an account can save up to $100,000 and keep receiving government benefits. CalABLE accounts can be used for many different qualified disability-related expenses, including education, employment support, housing, transportation, assistive technology and healthcare. The Executive Leadership of Constructive Partnerships (CP) Unlimited, supports the proposed amendment by HHS to #Section504. The clarified rules allow for a more equitable outlook towards persons with disabilities, ensuring that they are seen by medical providers with the same lens as other individuals, while expanding access to programs and defining standards for equipment that were previously lacking. Applying these parameters and guidelines, we also believe, will create a safer and more independent environment through which people with disabilities can achieve fulfilling lives… Continue Reading: https://lnkd.in/dCYBWd5W

A new bill introduced this month could dramatically improve financial stability for #California residents with disabilities by providing a savings account with $250, and authorizing the board of the saving and investment program #CaliforniaAchievingABetterLifeExperience (#CalABLE) to make additional financial incentives available for #PeopleWithDisabilities. This is the kind of change we want and need to see more of, and that should be implemented in California and other states. Special needs trusts, also called supplemental needs trusts, are designed for people with disabilities, usually to augment public benefits. People with disabilities often face expenses related to their disability that aren't covered by their benefits. These expenses could include specialized medical care, home renovations, and special transportation services and vehicles. With a special needs trust, a beneficiary can retain public benefits while using funds from the trust to pay for disability-related expenses.
