My dear friends in a reverence for life, too many animal rights/welfare/legal entities have an unfortunate tendency to make matters worse by playing fast and loose with reality.
They are much too quick to jump on a proposed rule or law as being animal friendly and therefore worthy of their, and our support, without a full exploration and exegesis of the rule or law under consideration.
The famous line from Peter, Paul and Mary’s send up of rock comes to mind:
“They (Mamas and Papas) have a good thing going when the words don’t get in the way.”
Transpose “facts” with “words” and you arrive at the crux of the difficulty with these groups.
The piece infra is one such illustration.
This group, and there are many others following suit in blissful ignorance, cheers on a proposed rule by the US Fish and Wildlife people that would “…ban so-called predator control on all national wildlife refuges.”
Whoa, Nellie! Not so fast, Poindexter.
A very brief review of the proposed rule brings to light five, count ‘em, exceptions to this ban, and five more, count ‘em, instances wherein killing is not considered to be predator control. These include our usual nemeses hunting and fishing.
My dear friends, while this and all related bromides are deserving of criticism, and I trust that everyone of you will investigate the verities of a situation before signing on to this sort of false victory lap, the essential quandary remains unaddressed.
Again, Homo sapiens arrogates to itself the role of God, the role of nature, in deciding which of God’s other creatures are deserving of life. In so doing our anthropocentric hubris comes to the fore, making an appearance with lethal consequences for the rest of earth’s denizens unlucky enough to be the subject of our unwarranted intrusion into the natural order of things.
My dear friends, the only antidote to this madness is adoption of and adherence to a reverence for life as our ethos. This is the irrefragable tenet that all life has worth and value, that no life may be relegated to the status of means to a human end.
This is the tenet levying upon devotees the solemn duty to protect, assist, and enhance life, all life.
This is a duty best discharged by loving our neighbors as ourselves and viewing all creatures who cross our paths to be our neighbors.
To do so is to spread the love of Jesus universally and generously.
Do that and no proposed rules will be necessary. Only an active involvement with life bestowing mercy and compassion on all.
That is a reverence for life.
Cum meo maximo amore!
