2nd ESA Computer-In-A-Room Challenge – one more week to register! Join the second edition of the challenge issued by #ESOC, European Space Agency - ESA’s world-class centre for #SpaceOperations, as we invite all universities from ESA member states or partner states to participate with teams of 2-6 talented students. Here’s a chance for #ComputerScience students - cross-discipline teams are also welcome - to showcase their skills and creativity while solving this captivating problem set by ESA Operations, Engineering & Space Safety experts. Student teams compete to develop innovative operational concepts that excel despite the set limitations. Expert panels will evaluate each entry and in the second round a few chosen teams will be invited to showcase their solutions at ESA's #SpaceOperations centre #ESOC in Darmstadt, Germany. 📚 The 3rd MedCyclones Workshop & Training School will take place in Frascati (Rome) from 15 to 19 July 2024❗️ The general objectives of the workshop (15-17 July) are to present and discuss recent scientific progress in understanding and modelling dynamical processes and socio-economic impacts of Mediterranean cyclones, as well as advancement in their monitoring and forecasting, from weather to climate time-scales. The aim is to reinforce efficient networking and collaborations between stakeholders, professionals from weather/climate services, and academic researchers. The Training School (15-19 July) is primarily addressed to PhD students, PostDoc, and early career investigators, as well as professionals and scientists from regional and national meteorological agencies. It will cover several aspects of Mediterranean cyclones: dynamics, processes, forecasting, predictability, and impacts at both weather and climate time scales. This roadmap outlines our vision for building an aerospace system within educational institutions, where our specialists will provide support and guidance at every stage, ultimately leading to the establishment of a self-sufficient infrastructure capable of implementing its own satellite programs and graduating new specialists annually. Why it is important: Many universities aspiring to undertake their own missions and regularly enhance their specialists' skills face challenges in determining the first step and attracting investors. Satellite development companies often focus more on engineering aspects, with less emphasis on educational ones. Therefore, OKB5's strategy and expertise will serve as an excellent guideline for realizing your ambitions for years to come. And, we have exciting news for those who consider the 1U format for their first mission. OKB5 has introduced a new concept for this form factor, based on integrating the key subsystems of the TriSAT picosatellite into the 1U Cleon platform. Why it is important: The new configuration will increase the available space for payloads by 2-3 times and reduce development costs, making potential missions more accessible to universities. The ARC has announced the outcomes of the 2023 Future Fellowships scheme. Congratulations to OI members Dr Karen Filbee-Dexter and Dr Wenhua Zhao! 𝗗𝗿 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗲-𝗗𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿: 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. This fellowship aims to resolve carbon removal and nutrient mitigation potential of Australia’s kelp forests now and in future. It will create new understanding of the ecosystem services provided by the Great Southern Reef, and the capacity of kelp forests to provide nature-based solutions to reduce emissions and improve coastal water quality. 𝗗𝗿 𝗪𝗲𝗻𝗵𝘂𝗮 𝗭𝗵𝗮𝗼: 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘆𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. This project aims to develop rigorous and precise prediction models for next generation offshore infrastructure, by capturing nonlinear wave-structure interaction. This project expects to generate new knowledge in offshore hydrodynamics (a branch of fluid mechanics) applicable to Ocean Engineering, using cutting-edge numerical technology, state-of-the-art physical modelling, and unique full-scale field data. This year, the International Space University traditional course, Space Studies Program, was in Brazil, in São José dos Campos, the main region of Brazilian Aerospace industry, city where I studied my first graduation in Electronic Engineering, in 2006. 10 years ago I was graduating by the second time, after successful completing the ISU course, happened in University of South Australia, in Adelaide. It was a great time there, with awesome colleagues from all continents, thinking the space exploration without forgetting the sustainability that it requires, because space is a natural resource, very, very valuable! And we are polluting the outer space, as we doing here down on Earth. ISU changed my mind about many topics, not only the engineering perspective but also legal, medical and business point of view, showing that it is not just rocket science, but it is part of the world, it can be profitable and we need to create good laws for the universal access to this rich environment! Space has no owner and we must take care of it with responsibility. 10 years ago I started to think diferently, I started to think about the Future. #isu #spaceawareness
