Pony Express “T3!”
OTD 1860, the first Pony Express service began moving mail from Missouri to California ($5 per ounce) in 10 days. The service lasted only 1.5 years until the transcontinental telegraph made it obsolete. Part of the lore of the American West, the inspirational Pony Express exemplified:
TEAMWORK: 80 riders and 400 horses utilized 100 stations on the 1,900 mile trip. There were no weak links in this chain
TONE: Defiantly boasted - an proved - a unified transcontinental system of communications could be operated year-round
TENACITY: Reliance on the ability and endurance of young, hardy riders and fast horses that traversed deserts, mountains and hostile territory. The recruiting poster read,”Young, skinny, wiry fellows not over 18, must be expert riders, willing to risk death daily. Orphans preferred.” Try advertising for jobs with that kind of poster in today’s society and see what happens!
